Metadata refresh is much slower with the new Plex Movie agent

Refreshing metadata is taking significantly longer than under the previous legacy agent.

My setup uses a network share per library, i.e.:

  • Films - \\nas\files
  • Television - \\nas\television
  • Music - \\nas\music

I recently ‘upgraded’ my Films and Television libraries to the new Plex agents, but found that I had a considerable amount of work to fix discrepancies post-upgrade. The full re-scan and metadata refresh for my 1,000 film library took several days to complete, and degraded the performance of the Plex Service to such a degree that playing a single movie would cause drops in the streaming, and there were failures to load Collections, or display the Recommendations

Collections in the Films library were still missing descriptions, and didn’t show all the posters/backdrops, once the full library metadata refresh had completed.

To ‘fix’ the collections, I had to strip the collection tag contents off of all movies (as deleting the Collection removes them but also locks the field), and then run a full-library metadata refresh again. This has already been running for 24 hours, and has only recreated about a quarter of the Collections, but I cannot check any of them as the performance of the Plex Server has degraded so they no longer load.

When are these critical issues with the new agent going to be resolved, and more imporatantly, how did this every make it to public consumption!?

[Edit] Oh, and whilst it’s doing things, it’d be great to see that in the activity button in the top right, as most of the time at the moment Plex indicates it’s not doing anything, and yet I can see processor and above all, network traffic - flatlining at 35Mb/s - on my server
