Metadata Refresh/Poster Issue

Server Version#: 4.66.1

So I refreshed my metadata and now half of my posters are missing. Not really missing, because when I got to edit-poster on a movie, it shows lots of posters, but the one selected is blank. Why doesn’t it actually pick one that works? Also, when I try to manually change it, sometimes it stays blank … I go back into edit-poster and the one I previously selected shows up blank.

What’s going on?

What agent are you using for your library? can you grab the xml info for that movie and put it in a text file

I’m using Plex Movie as the agent. I copied and pasted the xml info for the title mentioned above into a txt and attached it.

xml.txt (49.3 KB)

yeah that looks normal. if when it happens again would you mind sharing the server logs

I’m not sure you understand what I am saying. It didn’t just happen to one title. It happened to half of my titles, which equates to around 2500 titles. What logs are you wanting? This will take hours to manually correct. There has to be something else I can do.

I’m tempted to delete the entire library of 5k titles and add it back. Not sure if that will help or not.

Server logs attached.

I understand it happened to more than one. but looking at one instance may allow us to figure out what is happening in general.

So what is my best option here? Here is another one … The first three are blank. Originally only the first was blank. I edit and select the second (which had a poster showing) … Save … Poster does not update. I go back into edit-poster … And then the first and second spot is blank. Same thing on the third.

I believe all of this happened after the server told me there was a library update available that was better at matching or something. I ran it and then noticed this.

I’ve seen something like this in the past myself.

Lets say a poster is scrapped from TMDB and you have selected it as a poster for your movie. Then at some point after that someone over at TMDB deletes that poster for some reason (not meeting their requirements etc…). Once plex then refreshes the metadata its deleted as its been removed from the source site. That can cause this to happen and a blank entry to appear.

Is that’s what is happening here, I’m not sure but could be a cause so I said I’d mention it.

Here is another … The first five are blank.

I see a bunch of insufficient memory errors when resizing images for various things. But I assume your computers memory is probably fine.

I refreshed metadata again and now it keeps adding collections. This thing is totally f’ed up. I can’t even get it to stop and I have several hundred more titles than I did before, because it won’t stop adding collections.

I think at this point the answer is purging everything. What needs to be deleted in order for that to happen?

if it is adding collections then maybe the libraries Minimum automatic collection size setting is set low

You can just delete the library or if you want to start the whole server from scratch delete the plex data folder then restart server

In the process of trying to just delete the library and re-add it. Looks like that might actually fix my problem. It has scanned in about half of my 5000+ title movie library and it seems to be matching correctly with good posters for the most part. There are always going to be a handful that don’t match correctly (or that has been my experience), but it isn’t displaying a ton of blank posters like it was before.

Hate to delete the plex data folder and start from scratch, because I don’t want to mess with my series library or have to reconfigure any of the other settings. If I delete the plex data folder, all of those settings would be gone, right?

yes all libraries and their settings would be gone if you do that

I meant other server settings that do not pertain to libraries like users & sharing section, transcoder settings, remote access, ect. Are all of those settings stored in the plex data folder?

Could I copy the plex data folder to a different plex server and expect everything to work flawlessly as long as the paths to the libraries are the same? Would the version installed ever matter?

the users will not go away as those are tied to your account but the new libraries will have new library IDs so you will need to reshare them.

other settings are in the advanced settings file. on windows that would be in your registry. including the server ID https://support.plex.tv/articles/201105343-advanced-hidden-server-settings/

yes. that is how you generally transfer like if you get a new computer. I’ve done this many times. (though I am on macOS) just make sure everything including drive letters are the same. and it is suggested that you turn off emptying trash after a scan before you do it incase of a mistake it does not clear our existing DB entries because it can’t find files

This is a general guide https://support.plex.tv/articles/201370363-move-an-install-to-another-system/
