Hello my synology power supply failed and I had no data loss. When moving the drives to the new chassis and restarting everything it worked great, kudos sinology. However plex on the other hand works and I can see all my friends ‘servers’ BUT it cannot see any of my own content, all the libraries are gone and there is no option to add them back. Its also most like the flex server is now just a player for other servers. Its very strange. I cant find anything online about this so I uninstalled and reinstalled, no change. Anyone have any ideas as to whats happening and how to resolve it?
When you did the Synology migration, which reinstalls DSM, it does not know what the permissions are for each of the shares ON the volume, plus it must create user Plex
again. The installer detects if user plex
doesn’t own the Library
directory (which can happen in a migration) and starts a background task to change the ownership. This takes some time to ripple down through all the files. It can take up to 15 minutes depending on Library size and processor speed. If you try to use it too quickly, you’ll likely see the errors you are
The other situation to deal with is share permissions to your data .
Control Panel - Shared Folders -
Edit each share containing media
The Permissions tab will let you add user Plex
again so user Plex can see the media
ChuckPA that is the first thing I checked when I did the migration last week, I just triple checked and their is an existing flex user who does have r/w access to all the folders in question. Any other thoughts on things to try?
Please do verify user plex
has ownership if all the files in the Plex share.
If you don’t see it in FileStation, go give your username R/W permission to access it, then reopen FileStation and start looking in it
If user plex
isn’t the owner of Plex Media Server
(under Application Support
) then you’ve found the issue. You’ll need to manually set the owner (and I need to figure out why it’s not working in DSM 6.2 as tested) by right-click on Library
-> Properties
and making Plex
the owner. Make certain to check the box for “This folder, all sub-folders and files” so everything is set
Then restart DSM which will restart PMS in the proper sequence
Chuck, I did this and there is no change. To make sure I mentioned this… Plex doesnt even think that its a server, in the upper left the list of servers just shows others it doesnt see itself as a server. Not sure that makes a difference but if it did I would be able to see the libraries, I think
Ok,
Let’s get out the and perform a soft reset.
- Stop PMS
- In FileStation, drill down Plex/Library/Application Support/Plex Media Server
- Rename Preferences.xml to Preferences.xml.old
- Start PMS
- Open your browser and connect to it
- You’ll sign in and it will behave just as if creating a new server.
- Go through it with exception of Do not create any Library sections. SKIP this part
- Continue through and get to
Finish
at the end. - You’ll arrive at the dashboard with your libraries intact.
- Settings - Server and review each of your preferences. Some will have been reset.
Chuck we might need a bigger as I did these steps and it never entered into setup mode. Now all my other users (kids) disappeared and only mine remained so I have no idea what is happening. Plan C?
NOPE. it did exactly as I expected. You’re exactly on target.
I didn’t want to jump to far ahead
- Install the Synology Text Editor app from Package Center. (It’s a plug-in for FileStation)
- Stop PMS
- Open both Preferences.xml and Preferences.xml.old (you’ll have two text editor windows) in FileStation (highlight and right click)
- Being careful not to muck it up, Copy the
MachineIdentifier
value (what’s within quotes) and the companion “ProcessedMachineIdentifer” value FROM Preferences.xml.old and overwrite the ones in Preferences.xml - Save Preferences.xml
- Start PMS
- The “fam” is back
What we did was temporarily give your PMS a new identification ID to get you up and running again.
In doing so, it got a new identity (it looks like a new server on your account).
We just took the original identity information and gave it back. This is why I saved the original XML
In a few days, you’ll want to go into Settings - Devices - Servers.
You’ll see the temporary one we created here today sitting there.
Delete it. Just be careful not to delete the active one else you’ll need sign it out and back in
Make sense?
All right performed these steps, the family is back but there is no change in the server, in other words plex doesnt think its a server and my libraries are still MIA
Check your PM please and reply there?
