PLEX stopped functioning on Synology NAS DS218

Server Version#:
Player Version#:

Apologies in advance - I am not overly tech savvy, I can take direction but this has driven me insane and I hope I can find some help.

I used to run PLEX off my PC and it functioned OK - some hiccups But I opted to upgrade to a NAS system last year. I installed the packge in my synology DSM, added the folders (I just had them in regular folders in my NAS drive so PMS linked to that - didnt set up folders in the plex folder on the drive).

It functioned great - then one day, I had changed nothing and it stopped. I tried for hours to figure it out - I got only error messages saying that it couldnt access the files (all permissions had long ago been granted to Plex). Tried all the basic restart stuff. Nothing.

I gave up and then a couple months later it just started functioning again. I didnt change any settings it just played as it should. Then, again a couple months later (about three months ago) it stopped again. I decided to delete my libraries and re-add them - but the problem has degraded as an attempts to add the same library folders are unsuccessful - it just tells me the folders are empty (I can access the files just fine using the synology DSM net based site and on any of the computers on my home). To summarize: originally Plex found the library and even updated as i added files, but it refused to play them - presently I cant even get it to find the files at all, let alone play them.

I am at the end of my rope here. I love this service anytime it functions but it falls apart on a schedule of its determining and I am going to snap. Any help appreciated and I can dig in and provide any further info

Can you provide your server logs?

There are times when DSM forgets the permissions. This does happen.

On DSM 6, you grant permissions to the shared folder, including all sub-folders and files (the checkbox) for “Local User” “Plex”.

On DSM 7, you grant permissions to the shared folder, including all sub-folders and files (the checkbox) for “System Internal User” “PlexMediaServer”

(when you grant permissions, click on “Local Users” and change it to “System Internal User”. Now you’ll see “PlexMediaServer”)

I have attached the logs here, let me know if any other info is needed!

I had no idea there was even a System Internal User permissions section… this solved the bulk of the issue! My movies are showing up and working perfectly! I have a bunch of TV shows in a separate folder and another home videos folder that are still not populating in the plex library however. Can you think of any reason why a different subfolder with the same permissions wouldn’t work? Same issue as originally - i add the folder at the proper location but no items populate. The folder is in the same shared folder that I changed the system internal user permissions on.

Those are not your plex server logs. those appear to be your Synology logs.

I have attached the proper logs here - sorry bout that!

The problem has been solved! Thank you so much for the help!

The other libraries eventually populated… You are my saviour. I am forever indebted to you. I would give you a back rub if i knew you in person - you deserve it.

Im not seeing anything in the logs and you are saying things are fixed. I suspect it was a permissions issue moving from DSM 6 to 7.
