Migrating DSM 6 to 7 - PMS failing to migrate

I initially tried to follow the guide here.

Uninstalled PMS, Upgraded DSM.
Initially the install finished without attempted migration. It finished very quickly with a success message.
When logged in Plex, I saw two server options with one of them (the old one) inaccessible and the new one accessible but empty.

I went and uninstalled PMS with just uninstall options. I manually removed PlexMediaServer shared folder. This removed the new install data.

I then re-checked the permissions and updated them. After this the install seem to take a long time and eventually I found the Migration.log.

However, the install stopped with a generic failure message. I did not take a screen shot but it said to try install again later.

At this point it seems to be stuck in the “Installing…” state but nothing seems to be happening.

Migration.log contains the following and it’s been a long time. Over an hour.

I still have the Plex shared folder and all the library metadata seems intact.

What should I do?

I might be too impatient. It seems the ownership on files is still being changed. I did some snooping in the terminal. I am going to give it more time still.

What threw me off was the failure message from the package manager.

The installer can start a migration if it doesn’t have permission / can’t see an old server data so it sets up a new one (unfortunate side effect of “permission denied”)

Be 100% certain to “Apply to this folder, sub-folders, and files” when you grant PlexMediaServer Full Control of the Plex shared folder.

1. Uninstall with ERASE (Erase the empty DSM 7 server)
2. Grant SystemInternalUser PlexMediaServer FULL CONTROL of your “Plex” shared folder.

Now install again.

It will immediately start migration . (Sits at “Installing”)

In a new tab “Plex/Migration.log” will let you follow the progress.
It appears after 2-3 minutes.

Keep going.

When it’s done, it will say “Cleaning /volume1/Plex: Completed”

Do NOT restart DSM.

The process does not “Hang”. It processes EVERY file in the “Plex” shared folder.
(which is a lot of them)

I know it is painful to wait but one user waited over 2 weeks for the conversion from DSM6 → DSM 7. His Plex shared folder was 500+ GB of storage

It will take about 3 minutes for each 1000 media items (music, movies, episodes, and photos) you have indexed in PMS. If you have Chapter Images, add 1 minute per 1000 (approx 4 minutes per 1000)
