Libraries not migrating in DMS 6 to 7 upgrade

Server Version#: DSM 7.1.1-42962 Update 5
Player Version#: 1.29.2.6364.7000

Researched over a few days and I was all ready (I thought) for upgrade.

  1. Removed PMS

  2. Upgraded to DSM7 latest version

  3. Installed PMS latest - did not get any permissions errors - only a note on completion to say that install was complete and that I should change permission on any shared libraries to read/write
    install complete

  4. Changed the library permissions as required, ran PMS and Plex says there are no libraries.

  5. Used File station to add Full Control on Plex folder to PlexMediaServer

  6. Uninstalled PMS and then tried a reinstall. Same result - message indicated a clean install and same permissions message given.

I would love some help. Thanks in advance.

What does ‘Migration.log’ (stored in the Plex shared folder) show?

Do you still have “Plex / Library / Application Support / Plex Media Server” ?

Hi ChuckPa, thank you for engaging.

I searched the Plex folder for any file with “migration.log” in it and unfortunately there isn’t one? There were a bunch of other .log files but none with “migration” in the name.

The folder “Plex / Library / Application Support / Plex Media Server” does exist and seems to be quite populated as it is 9.92GB in size and contains 120004 files and 317108 folders.

I tried the latest PMS version from the website 1.32.3.7089-7000 - still no luck. No Plex for 3 days now :unamused:

How can I force the new install to recognise the existing Plex folder? Full control permissions are in place for all files and subfolders. I have double and triple checked.

I’ve been laid up again.

In order for the installer to recognize the contents of the “Plex” share, you MUST
a few things correctly.

  1. Confirm you still have Plex / Library / Application Support / Plex Media Server / Preferences.xml

  2. MUST give SYSTEM INTERNAL USER PlexMediaServer FULL CONTROL of the Plex share including all sub-folders and files (there is a checkbox for this)

  3. You must UNINSTALL the existing rogue DSM 7 installation with the ERASE option. ( The installer will not overwrite an existing installation. I did this to prevent accidental overwrite of a valid Plex install )

Start here in the FAQ

Understand the steps

  1. Set custom shared folder permissions using FileStation
    – Change ‘Local User’ to ‘System Internal User’
    – See “PlexMediaServer” appear in the list
    – Now create Custom permissions
    – (grants full Administrative, Read, and Write permission to user ‘PlexMediaServwer’

  2. APPLY this custom permission to All sub-folders and files of the Plex shared folder.
    – This will take time for DSM to complete (it’s expected)

  3. When complete, With the DSM 7 app UNINSTALLED & ERASED
    – The PlexMediaServer shared folder is empty

  4. Install the DSM 7 Plex app
    – It will automatically jump into “Installing”
    – It will SIT THERE at “Installing” while performing all the work needed to upgrade your DSM 6 installation to DSM 7. (about 3 minutes for each 1000 indexed items)

  5. IMPORTANT – DO NOT REFRESH THE PAGE
    – Open a new tab to DSM
    – In FileStation: Plex shared folder
    – You will see Migration.log appear after about 2 minutes.
    – you can look at this file. It will show you where the upgrade is in the work it’s performing.

It will look like this:

Plex Media Server migration to DSM 7 started: Fri Sep 2 21:31:18 EDT 2022
=== Fri Sep  2 21:31:18 EDT 2022 === Start: Change ownership
=== Fri Sep  2 21:44:07 EDT 2022 === Completed: Change ownership
=== Fri Sep  2 21:44:07 EDT 2022 === Start: Convert symbolic links
=== Fri Sep  2 21:47:10 EDT 2022 === Completed:  Convert symbolic links
=== Fri Sep 2 21:47:10 EDT 2022 === Start: Migrate Plex Media Server
=== Fri Sep 2 21:47:10 EDT 2022 === Completed: Migrate Plex Media Server
=== Fri Sep 2 21:47:10 EDT 2022 === Completed: Migrate Plex Media Server
=== Fri Sep  2 21:47:10 EDT 2022 === Start: Clean /volume1/Plex
=== Fri Sep  2 21:47:11 EDT 2022 === Completed: Clean /volume1/Plex

After you see “Completed: Clean /volumeX/Plex” , Package center will then start Plex.

Your next task is to give the new Plex username access to your media.
This is the same task you did initially for the “Plex” user. You now repeat that for “PlexMediaServer”.

Thanks ChuckPa, Install is now spinning and migrating. The one key point I missed was the ‘erase’ install of the first round install. That has made all the difference. I am glad I just left it until you responded - and didn’t go down a bunch of rabbit holes. I suspect the install will be here a while. Will update once completed.

All completed :+1: Thanks again ChuckPa
