Weird PMS Synology DSM6 -to-7 upgrade results

Have a single volume on a DS920+ that was on DSM 6.2 with PMS 1.41.1.9057 manually installed from plex.tv.

What I did:

  1. Stopped PMS, rebooted NAS, installed DSM 7.01 upgrade
  2. After DSM upgrade, rebooted NAS, then rebooted again
  3. Installed PMS 1.41.1.9057 for DSM 7, but did NOT receive message ‘ERROR: PlexMediaServer does not have full control of Plex share’ as described in ‘Scenario 2’, ‘#2 Migration Bootstrap’ in this guide. Instead, it said ‘Installation Successful’.
  4. At this point I had still not given the new permissions mentioned in the guide above. Because I did not receive the error message, I was confused.
  5. Opening the PMS webUI brought up the setup as if it was a new install.
  6. Uninstalled PMS and ticked the Erase option, rebooted NAS.
  7. Thinking PMS might be broken, I upgraded NAS to DSM 7.2.2, rebooted 2x.
  8. Downloaded PMS 1.41.1.9057 for DSM 7.2.2.
  9. Gave PlexMediaServer user Full Control of the Plex share as shown in the guide above.
  10. Installed PMS 1.41.1.9057 for DSM 7.2.2.
  11. I get the following ‘ERROR: Unable to migrate existing “/volume1/Plex/Library/Application Support/Plex Media Server” to DSM 7. System error 0. Migration log file: /volume1/Plex/Migration.log’. It also says ‘Installation Successful’ right under that.
  12. When I open PMS webUI everything looks back to normal, and players can play content (so far, only tried a couple things).

What’s happened here?

Thanks!

Re-reading your post. If PMS is running and your libraries, etc. are available, then it seems the migration was successful.

Where do you see the error message? Is it on-screen, in a log file, etc.?

Can you post the migration.log file to the thread?

If I may add here.

  1. You didn’t get the initial “PlexMediaServer does not have full control of Plex share” because the permissions assigned the Plex shared folder were altered somewhere along the way and made so restrictive that it couldn’t be read. This resulted in the installer proceeding as if a Fresh Installation.

  2. “System error 0” means you forgot to add “Apply to this folder, sub-folders, and files” when granting “PlexMediaServer” Full Control permission.

  3. When you get “System error 0”, some of the metadata files were not copied.
( I can detect the failure but can’t report which file/directory. This is why you get error 0 )

At this point, Examine your Plex shared folder.

  • Confirm you still have Plex/Library/Application Support/Plex Media Server and all its subdirectories (Media and Metadata are the most important)

If you have these and wish to rerun the migration.

  1. Stop Plex
  2. Rename the PlexMediaServer shared folder → PlexMediaServer-old
  3. Uninstall the package
  4. Open FileStation
  5. Manually set the permissions of the files & folders for the Plex shared folder again.
    – Older systems won’t have “Custom” button.
    – In Control Panel - Shared Folder - you must “Convert to Windows ACL”
( This is a failing of the DSM 5 → DSM 6 upgrade)

With the permissions properly set,

  1. Reinstall the package
  2. The package will now detect the Plex shared folder and begin migration
  3. The DSM Package Center will sit at “Installing” while this is happening
    – This is normal. Be patient. Do not migrate away from or refresh the page
  4. When it’s complete
    – Examine the final message from the installer
    – Examine Migration.log in the Plex shared folder
    – Confirm nothing from DSM 6 Plex remains there.

Thanks @ChuckPa & @FordGuy61 for the replies.

Seems ok now. Did as Chuck mentioned and got the ‘Migrated existing Plex…’ message after re-doing permissions and reinstalling. Nothing left in the old ‘Plex’ folder now but the Migration.log.

I could’ve sworn I checked the box to apply to folder, sub-folders, and files… I took note of it when reading the guide and everything. I guess I still missed it while going through with the upgrade.

Thanks again!

Sorry to bring this old post up again…

Maybe dumb question now but with things working fine, is there any reason I shouldn’t delete the old ‘Plex’ and ‘PlexMediaServer-old’ folders now?

Thanks

If you’re happy that everything is running well in the DSM 7 PlexMediaServer shared folder using username PlexMediaServer,

You can -

  • Delete the PlexMediaServer-old shared folder
  • Delete the Plex shared folder
  • Control Panel - Users: Delete user Plex
