I’m planning to replace my 10+ year old intel Mac. Looking at a M2 mac mini or M1 mac studio. I have considered keeping my old mac just as a plex media server, but for various reasons decided not to. Any issues/tricks migrating from Intel to Apple Silicon?
Copy the Plex Data Folder from the old to new system. This will keep the library definitions, metadata, etc the same on the new system. If desired, you can run both servers at the same time, then decommission the old server when the new one is stable (or keep it as emergency backup, etc).
There are several steps involved besides just moving the Plex Data Folder. See Move an Install to Another System for details.
Consider enabling Sync Watch State for your account. If you share with others, have them enable it as well. This will keep watched state synced between the servers if you run them at the same time. See Sync Watch State and Ratings.
Apologies, wasn’t clear. The Data Folder is in an external RAID. I would want to just attach the RAID to the new Apple Silicon mac. I know there’s a file somewhere w all the settings and meta data info. But can i just copy that over from an intel based mac to an apple silicon one?
Yes. See the Copy Additional Server Settings section of the Move an Install document.
