Migration of Plex from DSM6 to DSM7

Server Version#:DS218+
Player Version#:
As my handle says, I am very much still learning. I have read all of the posts that I can find about migrating from DSM6 to DSM7. I’m just not sure about the sequence of some of the events.

  1. The instructions here say to uninstall the DSM6 version before installing the DSM7 version. Okay, but do I do that before or after I actually install DSM7? I.e., is the sequence > install (upgrade) DSM7, then uninstall DSM6 app, then download new DSM7 app, then install the new DSM7 Plex app, then follow the other instructions in this forum?
  2. When you write about the “Plex” share or the “PlexMediaServer” share, are you referring to the folder that I see in the File Station in Synology DSM?
  3. Will the migration process you outlined bring over most, if not all, of the information about the movies I have already associated with the movies? A lot of my movies are oldies, and I want to be sure that, for example, “The Mummy” is tagged as the 1933 version, not the 1999 or the 2017 version. If I am going to have to do a lot of that correcting by hand, how is this simpler than just starting from scratch?

Thank you for helping me out. I want to try to be sure I know what I am doing before I just plunge blindly ahead.

  1. Yes, uninstall first. Otherwise, DSM will try to migrate without changing permissions – which will fail (username changed in DSM 7)

  2. Yes, DSM 6 keeps our metadata in the shared folder named ‘Plex’.
In DSM 7, we needed a new shared folder. I decided on PlexMediaServer and then wrote all the support code to work that way.

  3. The migration process, when you get all the permissions right,
    Will bring over EVERYTHING.
    – The only task for you afterwards is to grant user PlexMediaServer permission to read your media. (The installer doesn’t have that much privilege)

Warning – If you have a lot of media already indexed, It might sit at “Installing” for a long time – DON’T INTERRUPT IT. Let it go. It’s not hung.

Also, if you fresh the DSM page, you’ll lose the “installing” display . Not to worry. It’ll run until completed.

Open another tab to the syno and monitor its progress in “Migration.log” (in the Plex shared folder)
