DSM 7 - Migration Not Starting

I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve uninstalled, erased and reinstalled trying to get this to pick up the old database. And yes, I’ve set full control permissions for the new plex user.

In these instructions it says if the migration has failed to “erase DSM 7”. How does one erase DSM 7 or revert back to DSM 6? I thought this wasn’t possible.

(see #2: DSM 7 - Plex Media Server - Release Info & Migration instructions)

Uninstalling again. Deleting PlexMediaServer directory from shared folders, rebooting NAS, reinstalling Plex DSM 7 - x64 version for Synology DS918+.

I’d appreciate any help you can offer. Thank you.

Hi.

First, Sorry about that bad wording. “Uninstall and erase DSM 7 *Plex app
(Fixed)

Migration works ONLY when there is nothing in the “PlexMediaServer” shared folder
or it doesn’t exist.

Migration from DSM 6 “Plex” → DSM 7 “PlexMediaServer” is automatic, provided.

  1. The installation scripting can see your “Preferences.xml” file down in ‘Plex/Library/Application Support/Plex Media Server’

  2. The installation scripting can see “Full Control” permissions for all the folder in the “Plex Media Server” shared folder.

It has to perform this test because DSM 7 took away all the privileges we had in DSM 6. If we still had them, DSM 7 would not require any interaction on your part.

  1. Once there is no “PlexMediaServer” shared folder

-and-

  1. There is no “Plex” package installed

-Then-

  1. Open FileStation
  2. Right-click “Plex” in the left panel → Properties
  3. Go to the Permissions tab
  4. Create (if needed) a permission rule for “PlexMediaServer” which gives Full Control (All Administrative, Read, and Write privilege flags)
  5. OK the rule
  6. Now back in the “Edit Shared Folder Plex” page
  7. Make certain “Apply to this folder, sub-folders and files” is checked
  8. Click SAVE

This action (changing permissions) will take a long time if you have a lot of media indexed (about 1 minute per 1000 items – episodes, movies, photos, or songs)

Once this is done, You can install the DSM 7 Plex app and it will silently go to “Installing”.

It will sit there, dutifully, installing and migrating in one operation.

DSM may bark and say “Operation Failed”… IGNORE IT (it’s a security timer)

To check on the progress –

  1. Open a NEW tab to the Syno
  2. Open FileStation → Plex shared folder
  3. After about 2-3 minutes into the migration, you will see “Migration.log” appear
  4. This will show you the various stages and timestamps
  5. The last phase is “Clean /volume1/Plex” (or whatever volume Plex is on)

Thank you for the reply. I’ve done all this several times over. The Migration.log says it was completed several days ago but my libraries are still absent. My original Plex folder database seems to still be in tact though.

I’ve deleted the migration.log that only showed my initial and failed attempt as being completed. I’m about to try all this again. Fingers crossed. I’ll check for the new migration.log and let it run overnight and see if I get anything.

Update: Followed instructions exactly. No migration.log created. Again, looks like it was created several days ago and never updated with follow-up attempts. Installed in a few minutes and Plex already says ‘running’ so I’m assuming it’s done. How do I get my info back?

So it appears to have worked. Oddly though the files referenced a map drive and not the NAS directly. I added the local folders and am scanning the library now. Some odd collection I didn’t have before. Perhaps that’s just pulling from the metadata. I think I might have lost my cover art choices but so long as the library is there, I’ll take it.

Getting sleepy. Going to let it scan all libraries and play with it in the morning.

THANK YOU!!!
