Missed TV recordings

Using HDHOMERUN Connect tuners (2x units on LAN - ie 4x tuners) + latest 1.10 Plex server. Based in UK - EPG provided by YOUVIEW.

The repeatable issue I’m having is that the second of a sequence of (HD) TV shows is missed. After the missed recording it doesn’t show up in the ‘recording schedule as missed’ it just doesn’t show up - but it did show up in the future recording schedule (before the recording).

So PLEX knows that 2x TV recordings should take place - it processed the first one, but then entirely misses the second.

TV show #1 is 19:30 - 20:00 (with the +1 min means 19:29 - 20:01) - records OK
TV show #1 is 20:30 - 21:00 (with the +1 min means 20:29 - 21:01) - never records

Is there something I’m missing (besides being able to watch the second episode each day)?

Here are a few screen shots… Not sure if the duplicate Episode may be the cause of the problem (and how to solve - re EPG)?

I do something similar with U.S. broadcast TV using two (HDHR Extends), although I start the second recording a minute early instead of stopping the second a minute late.

I’ve been overlapping these two recordings for months and it’s never produced an issue, but in your case, both of the recordings are the same episode, in which case I believe Plex skips the second episode by design. New and Repeat Episodes causes the first airing of Coronation Street (which is not indicated as a new airing) to be recorded, but only if the episode is not already in your library; the second airing should not be recorded, because the first airing was recorded successfully. Can you give us any insight into why you want the second airing of the same episode to be captured, or is the guide data misleading?

Edit: Ah, I see that they are in fact different episodes from your second screenshot. The guide data indicating them as the same episode is surely the culprit here. Perhaps another user will have an idea, but I see this as a YOUVIEW problem rather than a Plex problem. Perhaps another U.K. user will have some insight. In any case, I would attribute the problem to the airings being listed with the same episode number (12-06), rather than the schedule overlap.

Search the forum with text Coronation Street, known issue that Plex is looking into. Issue is the guide data shows the Season/Episode as 12-06 for both episodes. Plex shows them both scheduled to record because episode 12-06 does not exist in the library. Once the first show records and is put in the library Plex then sees that it has episode 12-06 and cancels the recording of the 2nd episode.

@fecaleagle issue is basically the guide data. If they listed the shows with a valid season/episode number instead of month/day this problem would not happen. As I understand the 2 episodes are Part 1 and Part 2 of the show for that day. TheTVDB lists the 2 shows for 12/06 as Season 58 Episode 252 and 253. If the Guide data showed 58-252 and 58-253 for the 2 recordings Plex would record both.

Thanks, @johnm_ColaSC, that was the conclusion I came to after re-reading the OP’s second post. I think I was editing as you were posting.

Perhaps this could be worked around in post-processing by updating the episode metadata, or perhaps the file name would need to be changed as well? I’ve (thank the lord) never been required to look into the relationship between metadata and the Plex database, but it seems like understanding how Plex makes the determination about whether to record a “duplicate” episode would indicate what needs to be done to work around this in post.

In any case, it sounds like this is a known issue from the above.

Since you seem to be a repository of available knowledge about where Plex is headed, @johnm_ColaSC, has there ever been an indication that Plex is moving toward allowing name changes during post-processing? It’s counter-intuitive, given that a unique grab folder exists per-recording, that the name cannot be changed (or a sidecar subtitle cannot be extracted from CC and come along to the Library with the recording).

you have all been really helpful and yes, the two shows (different) having the same series/episode reference 12-06 is the clue to the failure to record the second (valid) episode on the same day.

I’m trying (Friday PM) to choose individual recordings (not series recording). I guess I’ll have the same issue - but I’ll come back later with the results.

Again, many thanks!

sadly no progress - I’ll try a different EPG provider - or re-naming files (WATCHDIRECTORY) but ATM not hoping for much success…

This issue is actively being worked on at this moment

Today’s Beta Release 1.11.3.4793 has changes to address this and will hopefully resolve most of the cases. (I say this reservedly because the information available for multiple episodes may not actually have identifiable differences.)

See Release Notice http://forums.plex.tv/discussion/comment/1615546/#Comment_1615546

  • (DVR) Episodes of the same show that air on the same day now record correctly (#6668)

A further change has just been released to address the issues with multiple airings

See 1.12.2.4929 release note

  • (DVR) More fixes around recording multiple airings of a show on the same day (#6668)

This fixes the problem where only one episode was recorded. There remains an issue with episode identification in the library and that is because of the lack of the detail in the Gracenote data. The airing time is used in this fix to label the episodes differently.

Thanks to @“Kings Media” for the additional user testing for this fix
