Missing Video Files after being gone for a week

Server Version#: 1.16.3.1402
Player Version#:4.6.4
I am using a Western Digital My Cloud Home which came with Plex media server. I had my home movies in an Other Video folder all organized and working fine complete with posters for each movie. I went away for a week, and when I came back, I could not view my movies, and when scanning the folder, Plex said it was empty, which is was not. I copied a movie and pasted it into the folder, and Plex decided it could scan and find my movies again, but I lost all the Posters I had made for the movies. Anyone know of a fix for this?

Well, I would imagine finding:
Settings/Server/Library/Empty Trash Automatically After Every Scan
and disabling it would be something you’d want to do.

If the storage goes away, for some reason, and Plex scans, finding nothing, and deletes the trash automatically, this is exactly what happens…

Thanks JuiceWSA. I will take your suggestion. The interesting thing is that my files are all still there when I look at them with File Explorer. Plex just looses the ability to see and catalog them. I moved a folder from my Other Video folder, and put it back, and Plex started seeing the folders again, scanning and cataloging them. However, it lost all my posters. Kind of annoying.

Yes, Plex doesn’t delete the files, only the database bundles associated with them. Disabled, you’ll see a trash can, prompting a rescan, I guess, to match items with their bundles again, an option you don’t have if the bundles are gone, of course.

Hmm, interesting. I am not really familiar with how the whole file system works in Plex. Is there a way to back up the database bundles? Where are they hiding and what is the extension? Can I even see them on my WD My Cloud NAS or are they in some kind of hidden file someplace? I looked using File Explorer, and there is no program file for Plex.

You may have one already:

Here’s where you’ll need some advanced help.
I have maintenance create a backup every 3 days, but I can’t begin to tell you how to restore same should the need arise…

@OttoKerner is the ‘Advanced Help’ I had in mind, but I’m sure there are many who can lend aid right about now. I’m not one of them.

The general way is noted down here:

For this, you have to directly access the Plex data folder of your server – which may be possible or not with your NAS.
I have unfortunately no experience with this brand at all.

Would there be a Ninja we might ping that would know?

While you Ninjae are hangin’ out on the Loading Dock smoking cigarettes you have to talk about this stuff… right?

Sorry, no WD owners that I know of.
Ninjas I know of are all either in the Syno or QNAP camp, and there are reasons for that.
I can only point here https://forums.plex.tv/tags/c/plex-media-server/nas-devices/server-western-digital

But from what I remember, with the MyCloud Home devices it is even worse than with the Shield.
OS is Android and there is no way to get access to the data at all without jailbreaking it.

Oh my… well, thanks anyway, Otto.

Maybe @TFL can assist here?

Wow folks, thanks for all the interest in my issue. I will check out the Syno and QNAP units. I have two WD MyCloud Home units in separate locations, One issue I have is that when I start my computer, I never know how it will map the drives. They are always mapped as Z: or Y:, but they often switch with each other. Kind of annoying for automated back-ups etc. Do you have any experience with 2 of the other units in different locations?

As both QNAP and Synology are Linux based, they don’t map, but mount

For QNAP, if you attach an USB drive, it’s as:

/share/external/DEV3301_1 or siml. by default

As such, also on QNAP, no way of knowing the last part of the mountpoint ( DEV3301_1)

When said, an USB drive is never ever on any OS to be considered a static drive, and should as such NOT be used on a server!

Instead, use internal drives in your NAS

I believe I saw a post mentioning a recent update for Plex, so that might have caused the library wipe. See https://community.wd.com/t/new-update-to-my-cloud-home-is-coming-inviting-beta-testers/237715/62

My Cloud Home runs a headless Android M.
I’d need to have a look at the source of the Plex apk they use here… but it’s completely different compared to the other My Cloud NAS running OS3, a linux flavor like on Synology/QNAP.

There’s ways to enable ADB and install Entware, see the WD community forum.
That would allow you to make backups of your library… but note that it’s a procedure that involves chucking the drives and it probably breaks your warranty.

Thanks for the info TFL. Enabling ADB is too much effort, so I guess I will just carry on and hope they figure out the problem with an update.
