I recently installed Plex and got a ROKU Ultra.
I grabbed a DVD to put on my Plex server (A Christmas Story, 20th anniversary version).
Seeing many use MKV format for their media format, I used MakeMKV and then ByteCopy to create the MKV file.
When I watched either copy the movie played with commentary.
Also copied to a VOD file with ByteCopy and it plays without the commentary.
No option when movie starts to play with or without the commentary.
Question for users of MakeMKV for ByteCopy - Is there something I didn’t configure correctly?
Also, is MKV best format?
I have a 7-channel audio system and would like a format that transfers all the audio tracks.
From Googling, it think MKV will do that.
Just wondering if any other formats are good at making a good reproduction of the original.
Ultra and Plex may be having an argument (read: a fist fight) at the moment.
If you play the title and press OK (if OK still does what it used to do) a player interface should come up. Arrow down to focus on the icons (if you’re not there already) and arrow left to the first icon… press OK.
This will stop playback and provide some options for playback. Select the Audio section, arrow right to the audio stream and select it. If there are several streams you can change them here (you can also do this beforehand by hitting the similar icon on the pre-play screen).
If the audio stream you pick isn’t the first track in the list Roku is going to insist on remuxing it, but that won’t take hardly any horsepower.
If MakeMKV has put a commentary track first - that is stupid. It’s more likely that Roku and Plex have decided that (possibly due to your settings) that commentary track is the most compatible and auto selected it. All a guess on my part, but explore a bit and see what you can come up with.
Thanks for the reply
I was testing with the Winapp mostly (easiest since I didn’t have to leave the PC
)
I did watch once through ROKU, but didn’t look at options from there.
I will do some more experimenting.
OK…
while you’re looking at the pre-play screen in Plexweb for this misbehaving title note whether the Audio section is white or yellow. If yellow click it and select another audio track to see if that track is the main soundtrack.
If that corrects the issue learn how to make MakeMKV put the Dam main soundtrack first - 'cause that’s just stoopit.

If for some reason you have disabled transcoding in Plexweb player’s options or through your Roku and your playback device can’t support high end audio there’s going to be a problem.
Thanks fr the tip about the ROKU menu.
There were 3 audio options
English (AAC Mono)
French (AAC Stereo)
English (AAC Stereo)
English Stereo plays by default with the commentary.
English Mono played without the commentary.
Didn’t try French since I wouldn’t understand the audio anyway.
So, No commentary and mono… not much better.
Also saved as MP4 and it had the commentary, but ROKU showed no audio options
Think I’ll try some other discs.
UPDATE: I change one of the advanced settings
I checked the box for “Allow direct play of AC3 Audio” and that seems to have fixed it.
Thanks for your help.
I still have issues with MakeMKV getting wrong cover art.
But that’s for another time…
The cover art comes from an online database. Correct naming will sort that out:

…A Christmas Story (1983).mp4
