MKV, Get Metadata from Local File?

Hi,

Not here to complain about this … LOL. I see it is a feature suggestion (and I voted for it), but in the meantime, just trying to figure out a workaround.

Is there a way to store a local (i.e. same directory) file, with metadata information for an MKV video file? I know that Plex doesn’t read the metadata from the video file (again, not complaining!), but I’d like to have a way to let Plex get the needed details.

And worst case, is there a way to edit some database in Plex, to update the title (for example)? That’s a bit more ugly of course, vs. just a file with some parameters in it

Thanks!

Are you asking how to edit the title/summary/etc in Plex, or is there more to what you’re asking for?

As for getting your local MKV metadata into Plex, the only ways I know of would be to either:

  1. Remux it to MP4 (which is generally more restrictive, so might not be a seamless process for all files)
  2. Use something like Tiny Media Manager to generate NFO files for your media and use a third-party agent like XBMCnfoMoviesImporter to use that NFO file to set metadata in Plex.

Neither option is great IMO.

Agree with you! I may just have to manually edit the information. It used to be there, but Plex lost it at some point, can’t seem to get it back

Thanks!
