Mobile Android player suddenly wants to activate on plex home

Server Version#: 1.19.4.2902
Player Version#:8.1.2.18135

As of today my plex mobile asks to be activated whereas it has worked properly for a few months. AFAIK the admin in a plex home network was not required to activate the app? Has anything changed that I’m not aware of?

The Plex clients for mobile devices are not free (and haven’t been as long as I’m using Plex).
They will be unlocked as part of a Plex Pass membership or by a one-time in-app-purchase.

If it worked without activation for you before… call it a lucky glitch.

No. A user must have a Plex Pass to activate the app. Members of Plex Home then inherit that ability, if the admin has a Plex Pass. You can setup Plex Home without a Plex Pass. Having Plex Home itself has no impact on activating the app, it is the Plex Pass that provides that benefit.

I decided to dig a bit deeper. I know I wasn’t required to activate before and have been running my phone for a few months. I’m not wanting to be lame, just don’t enjoy surprises like that.

I have one older android tv box (a non mobile device), which I used for a long time, mainly as the place it’s installed at doesn’t have a cable (but does have wifi). I did install plex on there some months ago as well, next to things like my IP TV apps to give it a try. The plex on there doesn;t require activation (yet), however a fresh install on an equal make android TV box now also needs to be activated to be useful.
So again, what’s happened?

See the first support article I have linked above… it’s really just the mobile clients (Plex for iOS, Plex for Android mobile) that require an activation / are not free. The big-screen apps or Plex Web / desktop players are free (not aware of any plans to change that).
That’s specifically documented and described.

As for “what’s happened” I cannot tell… it’s not the expected / standard behavior other users experience (hence the remark to call it a “lucky glitch”)

Another possibility is that some Android boxes do not run the Android TV version of the OS, but regular Android. In this case, the app may be installed in mobile mode, which will require the activation. You can switch this to TV mode in the settings under experience. You will not be asked to activate then.

Tnx. I’ll check that out.

The exact same thing happened to me; I was running Plex Media Server on an old desktop and Plex on 3 different Android tablet for about 3 months without being asked to buy it.
