Mobile Player Error

This problem is still ongoing for me on my Honor 10. It will play local media but not Live TV. The error returned after a longer wait is"An error occurred while attempting to play this video. Please try restartiing both the Plex Media Server and this app". This does not fix the problem. Server version : 1.19.1.2621 app version : 7.30.1

Can we please get an update on this? this has been happening for a very long time now, i get the exact same error as the original poster… from my phone to my tv, on my phone only, from my girlfriends phone, as well as trying to cast, even from a firestick on a completely different network… please shed some light on this issue, i dont want to try to find another server to replace plex with since it’s been good thus far but this is just insane… i have a feeling it has to do with this “new player” thing whatever that is.

Came here to post this. I have not been able to transcode on my android on wifi for it feel like over a year now… Works fine over off site or internally with direct stream.

Still having this issue, would really like to have some kind of communication from the plex team.

Is the issue with remote bitrate limit working correctly for you now?

I just ran across this thread. I using the 8.0.0.17168 beta on my phone and still have the problem.

Wondering if it was fixed & re-appeared, never fixed, etc.

Thanks.

I have the same issue only on transcoded streams. It looks like a HTTPS certificate issue : Peer certificate failed verification

I have the same issue, both on Android mobile 7.31.0.16802 as well as Android TV 8.0.0.17168-beta (only with the new player). Direct play/stream works fine, but everything that’s transcoded fails. I see this error in the logs:

[FFmpeg] [ERROR] [tcp @ 0x6edebe2100] Failed to resolve hostname 192-168-178-20.410cdec9d9e64e48adb7d2ca42c7d113.plex.direct: No address associated with hostname

Is there something I can do?

@fand0r1982 My remote Android users and myself using WiFi are seeing this issue, but when we switch to 4G/Cell Data it works great, not good though for our Data allowances and it only happens on certain files, I think it’s the direct play ones? I’ve also tried syncing the films that don’t stream to the devices and this fails miserably also, so is it an issue with transcoding or is it an Android issue? I’ve asked for help from @sa2000, @sixones and @ChuckPa to see what could be causing this issue, but with the amount of stuff they’re under, not sure whether they’ll get to it quickly?

I would like this sorted though as I use my Tablet more than my Laptop in bed. Other devices used on my server stream great, Roku, FireTV and Samsung TV’s, it’s just Android over WiFi… Strange issue… but looking at your error, it’s FFmpeg causing an issue???

Dave

Exactly! This issue is only present when connected to my local Wifi. Works great with cell data. Looks to be some DNS rebinding issue, that’s supposed to be fixed already as far as I can tell, but it’s not. On Android TV I can work around it switching to the “old” player. But the mobile devices don’t have such an option. Pretty frustrating.

I would like to see the FULL ZIP DEBUG server log files which capture this issue happening before commenting but based on

[FFmpeg] [ERROR] [tcp @ 0x6edebe2100] Failed to resolve hostname 192-168-178-20.410cdec9d9e64e48adb7d2ca42c7d113.plex.direct: No address associated with hostname

This tells me the local modem/router is not permitting DNS rebinding of the plex.direct private domain. There should be an error in the logs which precedes this one.

The solution is to allow the exception in the DNS resolver (Usually the modem/router) to permit (or declar) private domain: plex.direct

Hi Chuck,
Absolutely no place to put that in my router anywhere, and the issue only began a couple of server and app updates ago… I’ve included logs, not sure if these will allow you to see anything?

This is affecting both my Nexus 7(2013) tablets running Android 6.1.1, despite the Plex app still being fully available and supported with updates for this ageing devive. My Google Pixel 2 phone with Android 10. on the same app version is totally fine.

App version: 8.0.0.17276
Server Version: 1.19.2.2740.add6f438d (Synology Intel 64bit)

@ChuckPa @sixones and any other Plex Guru or employee,
Latest version hasn’t fixed the issue, I’ve changed router also to make sure it wasn’t a rebinding issue and the issue is still there on the new router to, so what gives?
Many of us on Android would like to actually be able to watch their movies, TV shows etc without having to rest into 4G data limits, this issue has been there since many updates ago now.
Abby ETA on a fix? Or are we doomed to be stuck with a player that seems to have regressed for Android Mobile users, but world for Android TV users because they can switch to the “Old” player?

Answers on a back of a postcard or within 2 meter social distancing limits please!

Update after a few failed playbacks before I’ve found that for some reason it will not play direct or transcode via WiFi video files with either AC3 or MP3 audio codecs but it will play them happily via 4G/Cellular Data.
If any other Android user is reading this can they confirm my findings? my Smartphone is the Honor 8x running EMUI 10/Android 10 and my Tablet is a Fusion5 F104b v2 Pro running Android 9, and my friend who remotes to my server with both a Tablet and a Smartpghone both Samsung and I’m surprised he’s having this issue with the S10e, and he can confirm my findings to, MP3 audio encoded videos only allowed… Will this be fixed sooner rather than having to yet again purchase another new phone or Tablet?

Dave

you need to downgrade your app to 7.27.1.15203 player version. Just download it from https://www.apkmirror.com/apk/plex-inc/plex/plex-7-27-1-15203-release/
First uninstalled the current plex app. Disable the google play store auto update and enable allow unknown sources to install apps from any location.

Just keep repeating the process until you find a correct Plex app version that works for you.
I hope this help. thanks me later

@Anuruddha Cheers for the link, but sadly neither 7.27.xxx or 7.28.xxx work over WiFi here, still the same issues and same error report to, I’m beginning to think it’s an issue with the latest PMS version now on Linux, just waiting patiently to see what @ChuckPa or one of the other Gurus say.
I’m reluctant to downgrade the server as its all working like clockwork for other devices locally and remotely, it’s just Android player over WiFi on both Remote and Local playback, but it works great via cellular data which is weird. It can’t possibly be a rebinding issue now as I’ve changed routers.
The plot thickens…

Dave

It seems that it only effects local clients using Android. After a couple of hours messing with this, I tried to watch one of the titles on a Moto X4 but with cellular data - and it played successfully. @ChuckPa is right - it is a DNS issue.

I am using a Pi-hole + local unbound resolver on my network, which prevents DNS rebinding without additional configuration. I added this to the unbound configuration in the server directive and it restored functionality to the Android clients:

private-domain: "plex.direct"

I could not accomplish this with Pi-hole’s DNSMasq alone, I tried using:

rebind-domain-ok=/plex.direct/

Hey all,
Just for the fun of it, and since I’m beginning to lose all hope that I’m ever going to get this fixed, here’s my logs with both WiFi trying to connect and 4G working fine on files that have AC3 and MP3 audio…
If it’s a rebinding issue, then it’s this a recent server issue after upgrade or a Plex for Android issue?

I’m still not… Maybe 75% convinced, that it is down to rebinding, as I’ve changed the router…

Need assistance as I’m losing my mind totally!

Dave

I bet this isn’t a rebinding issue. It is a PMS or android client issue perhaps android client isn’t sending correct device info back to PMS.

My amazon 4k firetv stick, Roku streaming stick+ and iphone clients are working fine. It’s not working in my Samsung Tab S2 8.0 tablet and PS4 Pro. In my PS4 it works only if i set disable the Secure connections in networks. if that setting is prefered simply I can’t login to PS4 Plex client. It just freezes. :disappointed_relieved::persevere::thinking:

cheers

@Anuruddha Well spotted!! I’ve just disabled the secure connections on the server side and all devices work!! @ChuckPa or @sixones Spread the word… Especially for MiBox users turn off the secure connections in the server and it works!!

Now we know it’s not a rebinding issue but a PMS security issue, when will this get fixed I wonder? How long will this regression last for?

Dave

@mw0dcmplex I don’t know how long it will take to sort this thing out. I have been struggling with this PS4 issue since 2017. Its been like more than 3 years now. Still PS4 is not fixed. So I highly doubt it
