Move from DSM6 Docker PMS container to DSM7 without installing native PMS

I’m currently running DSM6 with PMS running in a Docker container that is allowed to use the hardware transcoding available on my 920+.

I’ve definitely read up on all the nuances that DSM7 introduces and I’ve also read both of the installation threads for PMS Native on DSM7 and PMS Docker container on DSM7.

I have a question regarding a part of both guides that overlap.

The main migration thread for the native app specifies in bold ** * DO NOT CREATE ‘PlexMediaServer’ username. The package creates it for you.**

But then upon reading the instructions for running PMS in Docker on DSM7, it’s asking me to supply the PUID and PGID for that user. There are no suggestions for what to do if you don’t already have that user on your system.

I’d like to avoid installing the native app just to get this user created with the correct settings.

Does anyone have any experience or advice on migrating to DSM7 “without” installing the native app?

What special permissions/settings does the PlexMediaServer user/group have?

@Wingspanner

IF you do not have the native package installed,

AND never expect to install it ; remaining 100% in Docker,

THEN keep the UID/GID you are using.

BECAUSE you have no dependencies on the “PlexMediaServer” native package.

This is incredible. I’m super busy at work right now but have been watching the solidification of the DSM7 Plex rollout and love every bit of news.

I will try to test this out very soon. Thanks @ChuckPa. You’re an amazing help.
