DSM Upgrade to DSM7 - Plex install did not fail at the permissions stage

Hi, I upgraded DSM6 to the latest 7.2.2 following the upgrade instructions.

On installing the new plex package it didnt fail on the plexmediaserver perms as expected. I now have a ‘fresh’ install of plex. It does show that I can claim my server.. It however created the PMS folder but only 5.4Mb in size as opposed to the Plex folder being 98Mb

@ChuckPa or anyone - Should I uninstall the PMS and try again or claim the server? I guess I’ve lost all my preferences and indexing etc? :frowning:

The PMS user is there but obvs no perms to the old Plex folder which is where I was expecting the fail per the instructions to grant the access

If I launch the plex app from DSM it shows my server as unclaimed.

Okay all sorted.

To confirm, I had:

Uninstalled PMS on DSM 6
Checked the Plex shared was ‘Plex’
Set the idle timer
Upgraded to DSM7 (took 90 mins)
Then upgraded to DSM7.2.2
Ensured all packages were updated and DSM was ‘stable’
Did a couple more reboots
Installed PMS7.2+ from the plex site
The install never failed on the perms
Uninstalled (ERASED) PMS
The PMS System user was still there, so permed that user on the ‘Plex’ share
Tried the PMS install again and it took longer, then had the plex migration success
Perm’d the PMS user on all shares that has media in

All seems to be good, remote streaming works.

Not sure if there is ‘bug’ in the PMS7.2 when you bypass installing PMS7 or just my set up wasn’t playing ball.

Anyway, think it’s all sorted. I’ve put off doing this for a good couple of years but thought I best bite the bullet… I now know why I’d been putting it off.

@reddwarfcrew

Were you able to fully migrate your DSM 6 PMS → DSM 7 PMS ?

Not sure which PMS instance you nuked.

Yep I was in the end. The new PMS share is of similar size to the old ‘Plex’ share. Tutalli shows all the history still etc, so it looks to have fully migrated.

I’d uninstalled ‘PlexMediaServer-1.41.7.9749-ce0b45d6e-x86_64_DSM6’ from DSM 6 and was installing ‘PlexMediaServer-1.41.8.9834-071366d65-x86_64_DSM72’ on the upgraded DMS7.2.2, it was the latter that I did the full uninstall and erase, then perm’d the PMS user on the old plex share then retried and this time it picked up the migration.

Great. that was the ‘trick’ – Grant Full Control to PlexMediaServer of everything in the old Plex share with nothing in the new PlexMediaServer shared folder.

You can now safely retire user Plex and/or shared folder Plex.
