Move from old synology nas to new

I’m currently running Plex on my Synology DS218j NAS DSM7 but I’m getting a new synology ds220+.

I want to keep the hdd drives I’m currently using, 1 of which I use solely for Plex and my media collection. What is the best way to transfer it onto the new NAS? Can I just take the HDDs out of the old synology nas and put them in the new then re-install plex or would that be just too much wishful thinking?

Thanks for any help. If possible I don’t want to loose all the play counts etc.

Synology offers migration with a lot of their models. Its pretty simple and they have a guide. If your models are supported you can pretty much just move the drives over to the new one. Dont even have to reinstall Plex I think, so long both NASes use the same CPU architecture.

Follow their guide though

Thanks. That’s brilliant.

If I may add ?

  1. Synology migration is super easy. “It just works”.
  2. If you did change CPU architecture,
  • Uninstall Plex ( don’t erase anything )
  • Install the new package for that architecture
  • It will grab new codecs as it needs them
