Move Media Content to a New Location

Hello , i have a 2tb disk with films in it and i want to move my files to a larger 8tb hdd.
I have copied the files from 2tb to 8tb .
Disabled empty trash.
Added the new folder in library and hit scan library .
What should be happening is keeping the thumbnails and watched status and add a new “play version” for each film .
But what is happening is the film’s thumbnail appears two times in the library next to each other , and the old one (from the old HDD ) appears to be “watched” which is correct but the new one (from the new 8tb drive) appears to be “unwatched”

How can i fix this issue ?

Edit the library
Remove the path to the new hard drive
Save
Shut down Plex
Swap the drive letters of old and new drive
Make sure the folder names of old and new drive are the same.
Start Plex server.
It should behave as if nothing changed.

I have the exact same problem as the OP. I’ve successfully duplicated my TV and movie libraries onto new disks and when I add in the new locations for the TV and movie folders under the library management section, the TV folders all work as expected. What I mean is that the media is re-scanned, considered duplicates of everything already in the library and everything gets an icon to show that each media item has two files. I then remove the old folders from the TV libraries, empty the trash and everything is good to go on the new disk in the new location.

However, with the Movies folder, everything is re-added as a duplicate, with a new ‘added’ date of today, and with an un-played status, regardless of current play status. This is not expected behavior, and as this is on OS X, the disk drives are located at /Volumes/[name] and can’t be renamed. The whole point of this exercise is to change the location name. There are no drive letters to change.

The idea of migrating media to a new location with a different root file folder hierarchy has been a supported methodology for a while and works for TV, but currently does not seem to work for movies. Any ideas on how to overcome this problem? Is this a recent bug, a new feature or have I changed a setting without realizing it?

I cannot do that , i have 2 old HDDs(one for films and one for tv shows ) and i merge them in one HDD , the paths cannot be sustained . I have to add tho that the tv library works as expected , i only have this issue with films , as the fellow user
@D-Day pointed out . I could create hard links i suppose but this is not a good practice as It can break anytime by mistake .

The effect you are describing (generating duplicates of all movies) can be explained by this:
The existing items in the library have been matched with a different metadata agent than what is currently selected as the default agent for this library.

The reason could be that you:

  • manually changed the default agent in the properties of the library
  • performed a library agent upgrade when you were asked recently by the Plex client, but never completed this upgrade by a full “Refresh Metadata” of the whole library

Take a look at the content of the guid="... XML property of a few of your existing movies.
Do also look what is selected as your default agent in the library properties.

@OttoKerner Bingo, that’s exactly what it was, thank you for your assistance.

I completely refreshed the metatdata and also did a file scan and then an analyze for good measure and this time when I added the new folder, all the movies were found and added to their existing instance. I can now remove the old folder and empty trash and my migration will be complete.

Thanks for your quick response.
