Move media folders without copying?

I currently have a D:\ drive with three root folders, “Films”, “TV”, “Kids Films”, I would like to move these into one parent folder, “Media\Films”, “Media\TV”, “Media\Kids Films”.

The instructions I have read say to make a copy (not move) the files into their new location, update the libraries in plex server and then delete the old location. However I do not have the free drive space to make a copy, not even one of those folders at a time.

Is there a way I can move these folders? I dont mind if ples server has to rescan or download metadata etc the only thing I do not want to lose is the Added Date and whether something has been watched or not.

Then just move them.
Update library afterwards, followed by Empty Trash.

any other configuration needed? auto update library? auto scan?

These options don’t make a difference if the media files are simply moved, instead of following the guide here:
https://support.plex.tv/articles/201154537-move-media-content-to-a-new-location/

A few questions on this guide:

  1. Why do I need to stop PLEX before I copy, if I’ll restart the server after copying the data and will do a library update? (note, the new location already exists and it’s part of the library. i.e: locationA and locationB are part of the TV library. I want to move stuff from locationA to locationB)
  2. I’ll not be removing the old location because I still have other stuff in there. I assume I still need to do the “Empty trash” step.
  3. Can I re-enable the Empty trash automatically afterwards?
  4. I still don’t see what the difference is if I just:
  • leave the empty trash automatically running
  • copy my data across the new location
  • let plex update library (I end up with 2 files for each item)
  • delete old location data
  • let plex update library again (hence removing the “2” for each item)
when I do this, my watch status remains, but the stuff appears as “Recently added”
  1. It is purely a safety measure, so partly copied files don’t get scanned. Disabling automatic and periodic library updates on the target server will achieve the same result.

  2. The guide doesn’t say you have to empty the trash, it says you should disable the preference ‘Empty trash automatically after every scan’

  3. yes. again, this is a safety measure. you might do fine without it, but don’t complain if your changed method doesn’t yield the result you’re after.
