Moving contents to a new location but keeping generated video preview thumbnails. Is it possible?

Server Version#: 1.19.4.2865

I’d like to move a library folder from /volume1/video to /volume2/video
Following this guide Move Media Content to a New Location I think PMS will rebuild all video preview thumbnails.
Is there a method to simply change the path and get a fast switch like for Upgrading a Hard Drive method?
Could symbolic links help in this case?

Mod-Edit: fixed those links

If you follow the guide linked in your post, that will maintain the available metadata and media assets such as posters, video preview thumbnails etc.

Basically you make Plex think it found duplicates of your original files in the newly added folder. So instead of starting over from scratch it’ll link the newly found files to the existing records.
When you remove the old drive/folder as a source from that library, all it’ll take away is one version of the records – however as they now have a 2nd version, linking to the new location, Plex won’t lose any of the media.

I’ve done this myself a number of times and it’s very straight forward (a few clicks and you’re done; everything remains in place).

In theory you could also create some sym links…
The approach described in the guide is more solid and does not depend on that link to persist.

Thanks for your feedback.
I have 3 big folders in this video folder and just tired with the smallest one (400GB) and it works :slightly_smiling_face:

After the copy of the other folders I’m now having issues removing the old content location from the library: I can remove it but after saving, I get an infinite loading indicato for some minutes, then I get the “Your changes could not be saved” error, then Plex becomes unstable.

reloading the web page, I get the old location still present:

I’ve also tried this method but without success.

After a few hours, despite the error shown, the old content location has been removed.
