Moved Plex Media server to older version to keep system from crashing

Server Version#:1.41.1
Player Version#:

I moved to an older version of Plex Media Server and corrected the server from shutting down randomly.

Is it safe to assume that this is related to your earlier post related to Plex Media Server shutting down?

If so, it would likely be better to continue in that thread and update it with your findings. It would also be helpful if you included the full PMS versions involved (Settings → [Select Server Name from Drop-down] → General).

Finally, your server logs will mostly likely be needed for any troubleshooting/diagnosis to be done (click the orange link for steps of how to collect the logging). As long as they haven’t rolled too recently they should show information from when you were on the problematic version.

Yes, sir. Uninstall and download an older version from Git Hib. It appears the updated server software was the issue.

I have the log file from this morning if you need it.

Yes, the logging could be helpful in seeing what’s going on.

Here you go, hopefully it helps. Saw several users on Reddit with the same issue.

There are many errors in your log which follow this pattern:

Nov 30, 2024 16:52:19.860 [368] ERROR - Error creating directory "H;\": Access is denied
Nov 30, 2024 17:00:37.770 [11376] ERROR - [Req#f5f/Transcode/219437eee78ea71f-com-plexapp-android] Error creating directory "H;\": Access is denied
Nov 30, 2024 17:00:37.773 [11376] ERROR - [Req#f5f/Transcode/219437eee78ea71f-com-plexapp-android] Error creating directory "H;\": Access is denied
Nov 30, 2024 17:00:39.845 [11376] ERROR - [Req#f91/Transcode/219437eee78ea71f-com-plexapp-android] Error creating directory "H;\": Access is denied
Nov 30, 2024 17:00:39.847 [11376] ERROR - [Req#f91/Transcode/219437eee78ea71f-com-plexapp-android] Error creating directory "H;\": Access is denied
Nov 30, 2024 17:02:04.032 [15552] ERROR - [Req#fdc/Transcode] Error creating directory "H;\": Access is denied

Can you check the value of transcoder temporary directory in Settings → Transcoder (Show Advanced) in your PMS settings? It could be in one of your library paths as well. I’m pretty sure Windows doesn’t allow a semi-colon in a drive letter specification like that.

These errors are happening around the time of playback attempts where transcoding is required (or re-muxing). It not being able to access the specified transcoder temp directory could be problematic.

There are some other errors and warning in the logs as well. Other prominent ones are web hook events unable to be delivered to Trakt:

Nov 30, 2024 17:02:04.364 [14160] WARN - [Req#1082] Webhook: Error delivering payload to https://trakt.tv/vip/plex: 400

If it isn’t active anymore you should remove the web hook from Plex’s configuration. If it is active and should be working, that’s something you may want to investigate further.

Made changes per your email. Can you take a look again?

The two errors/warnings I noted earlier are no longer present, so that’s good. There are still a number of other errors and warnings, but at least some of them are normal (they sometimes log work-in-progress stuff which hasn’t been fully implemented yet and other innocuous items). It looks like you’re on version 1.41.1.9057. This is the version which works, correct?

[Edit]
Something I also noticed is that this seems to be a really busy server with a lot of media scanning and analysis taking place. Some of these logs only cover a span of 8 to 10 minutes. Did you recently add a lot of media or refresh all metadata or analyze media, or some combination? Or do you have any scripts running which touch your media files such that Plex might see a change and initiate an automatic scan?

Yes and no. I’m still having some issues. The server is not shutting down but randomly does not play.

One more odd occurrence: see the attached picture. I have some files on my server, as well as others, that play to a small screen instead of a regular large screen. But most other files play correctly. The TV in the picture is 85 inches.

Thank you for your time in reviewing. Let me know if you need any other info.

I just saw the last part about the server being busy. Turned off automatic scan. New logs.

Did you have a change to check on warnings?

I don’t see anything in the latest logs which concern me overmuch. I think it would be worthwhile for you to upgrade back to 1.41.3.9232 again to see if the situation has improved. If not, please provide updated logs.

Regarding the image size for playback of certain files the only time I’ve seen that is when the display mode is set to “Original” in the playback settings on Android TV. If you’re using Android TV and play one of the videos showing the problem; then bring up the OSD, select the three-dot menu, select Playback Settings, and then check “Display Mode.” If it is set to Original, change it to Letterbox or Stretch.

THe server updated to 1.41.3.9276

The problem with the size “Display Mode” corrected the problem. Thank you

Note On Google TV when you go to playback settings, the option to change
Display Mode is not visible. I can take pictures if needed.

I appreciate your help in resolving the issues that were at hand.

Sorry, last question. When I select Sign in Automatically, I save it but it still asks for login in Pin. If I go back into settings the Sign in Automatically is not checked.

It’s pretty easy for me on the server PC, but more difficult at the remote sites.

THank you again.

Is this in a web browser? If so, do you run any extensions, or is the browser cleaning up cookies after visiting a site? If so, you may be able to add your server’s IP address and/or plex.tv to your browser’s exclusion list for this behavior, and try disabling any browser extensions you may be using to see if that helps.

No, this is an Android program downloaded from the Google Play Store

Plex: Stream Movies & TV

Plex, Inc.

Sorry, guess I should think about the answer first.
Will try your suggestions.

Sorry, I’m not sure then. I’ve only ever seen that issue in the web app as far as I can recall.

Turned off clear cookies in Chrome Privacy and Security. Issue resolved.

You have been very patient with someone who knows enough to be dangerous.

Thank you
