Moved Plex to newer computer - Worked fine for a day now it's unreachable

Server Version#:1.22.0.4163
Player Version#:PlexWeb 4.51.3

Moved Plex to a newer computer and it worked great. Super-fast starting playback. That was yesterday. Today’s I’m moving between UNREACHABLE and simply just not playing back anything. I’ve restarted a few times, optimized the database. I’m at my wit’s Plex Media Server Logs_2021-03-15_10-06-10.zip (5.2 MB) end.

Of course, Plex worked fine for years on my 11 year old computer, so why would I expect it to work on a much newer machine. GRR… Hopefully the answer is in the logs for you smart people. Thanks!

It’s even unreachable on the computer that it’s running on at 127.0.0.1:32400. The “reachability” comes and goes.

restarting the server seems to fix it - temporarily. Then the problem comes back.

Try from a Browser: (https://app.plex.tv/desktop#)

I’m not sure I follow - I’m trying it from a browser and from an iphone. On the same network and also tested outside of network. Same issues.

Try the above address on server

I have tried that address too. The problem is after this fourth restart of server, right now everything SEEMS to be working… but This happened earlier too then it stopped working again…

Sign out and back in of your Plex account

Tried that - it’s working now… I guess I’ll keep monitoring and hopefully that will be the easy solve. Thanks.

Checklist for a new plex server machine:

  • network connection must be categorized as “private” by Windows
  • disable the power management on the ethernet adapter, disallow switching back the speed in power saving mode
  • set a fixed local IP address, either in Windows or in your router with DHCP address reservation

Videos not playing again. Network connection is private. The power management was enabled so I disabled it. How do I “disallow switching back the speed in power saving mode”.
I have a fixed IP.

So two of the three were already set - hopefully the power saving mode could be the issue (but it was only like 5 minutes to go from working to not working - does it happen that quickly?)

More update : Videos and even music still won’t play. Plex server using 40-50% CPU (as it seems to be again processing my large music section. It was scanning/processing the music section all day yesterday (took over 24 hours to re-see all my existing music in a new directory) but even while it was doing that, videos still played fine. So I think this is something else.

Hitting play on a video doesn’t seem to be doing anything. The circle spins on the browser - looking at Tautulli it says Nothing is playing. Usually that will show something playing even in the few seconds before the thing actually starts playing.

Then let it finish this first.
Where are the media file stored? If these are external drives or network file shares, you want “Empty trash automatically after every scan” disabled, or it may throw out all content and re-scan the whole library from time to time.
After it is done with scanning and activity has dies down, let it perform a database optimization.

OK - so this is weird. What it was doing when it was 40-50% CPU was actually two lines for each album :
Finished processing
Download metadata

the activity circle wasn’t spinning.

NOW the CPU is down to about 2.4%, the activity circle IS spinning and it says SCANNING MUSIC again.

AND Videos and music is playing again.

I’ll chalk it up to weirdness (though when these problems started, CPU was negligible and nothing was scanning or processing. Hopefully everything is fixed now and after the (seemingly endless) music scans, it will work great again. I’ll be back.

Thanks again for your help.

Let it definitely sit switched on for the first few days and nights. Maybe even extend the server maintenance period by a few hours to give it enough time.

Sorry, I forgot to explain: this option is only available in some network adapters.
Yours might not have it.

Came down this morning to an unresponsive Plex again - Couldn’t connect directly or indirectly from different computer or even on the same computer as the server. Rebooted - still nothing. So I figured I’d update to the latest version (beta).
Ran the update, and now for ten minutes it says “Updating library, please wait…”
How long am I supposed to wait?
I guess I’ll wait and report back soon.

Plex finished updating itself and now (knock on wood) seems to be working great again.
Hopefully I won’t revisit this thread tomorrow…

Yes, there was a rather long-ish index update taking place: Plex Media Server - #409 by Ridley
