We have started rolling out a change which will affect the default poster artwork we use for movie titles across our entire service, including the “Plex Movie” agent used for personal media inside Plex Media Server.
We’ve selected a new primary metadata source for images which should improve the quality of the posters we use, especially for lesser known titles in our metadata catalog. This new source will also make it easier for us to manage our metadata database moving forward.
Not every item’s artwork will change however and some may just have imperceptible changes. As taste on poster artwork can be highly subjective we’re sure this will be an improvement for many of you while the opposite will be true for others.
One thing that won’t change is the ability for you to customize your posters and artwork for your personal media libraries which will still include the old defaults as options along with the plethora of other custom options that we provide.
This will not affect posters for existing personal media items which have been manually changed by you in the past or for items which you have provided custom images. Newly added and existing items which have not had their artwork manually changed will receive the new default posters (for existing items this will only change once a metadata refresh occurs).
Feedback
As with all changes made at scale, we will run into cases where we end up with substandard artwork for a small percentage of content. We are already testing and addressing these cases but it’s impossible for us to catch absolutely everything.
If you come across something that doesn’t look right, please let us know by making a post on our forums.
