Movie Extras Filename Extension Case

PMS 1.14.1.5488 on Windows

When organizing movie extras in subfolders (see the bottom of https://support.plex.tv/articles/200220677-local-media-assets-movies/), media files with all lowercase filename extensions—e.g., “…\Casino (1995)\Featurettes\Vegas and the Mob.mkv”—are properly scanned and added to the Plex DB, and show up as extras in Plex players, as expected.

However, extras media files with all uppercase filename extensions—e.g., “…\Casino (1995)\Featurettes\Vegas and the Mob.MKV”—appear to be skipped, and do not show up in Plex players.

Expected behavior would be that the filename’s extension’s case should not affect whether the file is added to Plex, or not.

Note that the main movie’s filename’s extension’s case does not matter, as filenames with all uppercase extensions [“Casino (1995).MKV”] as well as filenames with all lowercase extensions [“Casino (1995).mkv”] can be added to Plex, equally, as expected.

Another case of Plex not picking up a media file (not directly related to the original post, but similar experience):

In this case, movie folder name is “…E tu vivrai nel terrore! L’aldilà (1981)” (without the quotes) - Plex does not scan that folder for media/movie

Removing the leading periods ("…") from the folder name allows that folder to be scanned

Alternatively, adding a leading apostrophe ("’") to the folder name allows that folder to be scanned

Mentioning it here in case it is helpful for others - I was unable to find anything in Plex support that Plex skips Windows folders that start with a period

Thank you for this analysis and for reporting it!
I will file this as a bug.

This is because Plex is developed to run across different operating systems.
And the general convention on UNIX-derived OSs (practically everything else than Windows) is: file names and folder names starting with a period are considered “hidden”.

Great, thank you for submitting the uppercase filename extension issue.

For Plex skipping filenames starting with a period, can this be added to the support web pages - for example: here and/or here.

Much appreciated, both.
