Movie isn't seen in plex

Server Version#: Version 1.31.3.6868
I use a mixture of .mkv and .mp4 files ever since I started with plex. I had a copy of tron.mp4 forever. I just noticed it is not indexed in the web player. It is in the movie folder and runs when started in QT. I reindexed but it still isn’t seen. I removed it from the folder, and copied a new copy back in and reindexed. Nothing. What I am doing wrong?

The file is actually .m4v

Naming & Organizing Your Movie Files
Naming & Organizing Your TV Show Files

  1. Name and organize the movie per Plex recommendations.
  2. Plex Dance the movie after renaming.
/movies <-- folder added to movie library, name does not matter
.../Tron (1982) {imdb-tt0084827} <-- movie_name (year); IMDB/TMDB ID optional, but helps
....../Tron (1982) {imdb-tt0084827}.ext <-- ext = mkv/mp4/etc
.../TRON Legacy (2010)
....../TRON Legacy (2010).ext

Additionally, Plex will prefer embedded metadata from mp4 files if configured to do so. If the metadata is incorrect, Plex may not display the movie correctly.

To tell Plex to not look at embedded metadata:

  1. Edit the library → Advanced → deselect Prefer local metadata → Save Changes
  2. Rescan the library & refresh metadata if Plex does not do so automatically.

I checked the setting for metadata and Prefer local was not selected. Are you suggesting I rename the file Tron (1982) {imdb-tt0084827}.m4v with all the embedded brackets etc?

You should always put the year in parentheses. You don’t 100% needs to use the IMDb number, it just helps sometimes if there’s another movie with a closely related title like a sequel or remake

The year did the trick! I have had plex for 10 years, and I have never done that year thing. Thank you for your help.

Odds are it got merged into, or was miss-identified as a different movie.
