Movie not loading, Plex hanging

Hi all, I am a very happy user of Plex. My setting is I have movies on a Synology NAS. And Plex server running on an Nvidia Shield. Everything worked great for around two years.

Since a week I have the following issue. A movie is not loading anymore. First I thought it was the share on the NAS. So I disconnected and attached the mounts again. No difference. I emptied all the cache. No difference. I deleted the data and had the Plex fully installed all over. For this I had to analyse the full library again so everything was renewed. Also no difference. I checked connection through other programs like Kodi and the explorer on the Shield. They all find the movies without issue and play them without delay. I am lost for options.

Just a minute ago I found out the following. When I click play on a movie and then press back once the movie tries to play but after 20-30 seconds it goes back to the movie screen. If I then press play AGAIN it starts up in seconds! I tried this for a few movies and they all work like this. If I then play them a second or third time that specific movie starts immediately. So it looks like Plex gets into some kind of loop when starting to play a movie for the first time after being added to the library.

Is there anybody out there with a hint how to solve this. Much appreciated!!!

Server Version#: 1.13.2.5149
Player Version#: 3.87.2 (is this correct?)

Is this for playing in or outside your network? I would check the setting on the PLEX app to see how your settings are for playing in both inside and outside your network. The 1st time it loads it probably checking to see if it needs to transcode or not and hitting the back button probably doesn’t help things if you’re hitting it right away. I would look at the details while it’s playing to see if it’s tranciding. If so, probably explains the delay on 1st trying to play something.

It is just inside my network. I have nothing outside. The only thing I see is the “waiting circle” and the Shield not responding to anything. To me it looks like it is completely hanging. I have no idea how to further research / analyse this.

The other strange thing of course being that everything worked well until recently.

Are you able to play anything from any other client besides the Shield? Also check to see if there is an update to Plex in the Google Store.

Can you check if you have HDMI audio passthrough enabled in the client prefs? If so disable it and try

Thanks. Yes, it works from my computer or from my iPad. See also comments on other reply.

ZThanks. I have pass through on because otherwise the Atmos does not work. Anyway, I turned it off and did not make a difference.

I deleted all updates on both the Plex client as the Plex Server. Made no difference. I then went to the App Store and had both updated. No difference.

I scrolled through all settings, no changes make a difference.

Other programs on the Shield work. If I run the movies from Kodi or from the explorer they immediately start up.

I am completely lost. Everything worked fine up to some time ago. The only difference I could think about was a VPN I turned on on my NAS. I even checked that, no difference after disabling.

I am also no guru. Any help is MUCH appreciated!!!

Thanks.

I managed to get a bit of progress. I fiddled around with the settings and did something called database optimisation and something else. Cleaning bundles or so. At least the movies are starting again. However, it still takes like 30 seconds sometimes.

I read somewhere that this issue might have to do with the fact that there is not enough memory available on the Shield to support transcoding or so.

Is there anybody who can point me in the proper direction? No idea how to continue again. Thanks.

What model Shield and what’s the setup you have? Wondering if it’s running out of space to transcode. I’m pretty sure I’ve tested before transcoding a couple of videos in the network before without any issue. I have a 256 GB SSD attached as shared storage. Please check on the space available. Try to clear cache and verify where the Transcode location is. Also, what happens if you Direct Play?

Thanks for the reply. I have the Shield with 16Gig, no HD.

I deleted everything I am not using on the Shield. 12Gig free. More than ever before. No change. I cleared the chache.

What do you mean with the last remark Direct Play, how do I do that?

See before, everything worked for around two years without any issue. I have no idea what triggered this a few weeks back.

This setting would need to be done on each client. Go to settings and look for something to do with streaming at home. Either set to maximum or original quality. Transcoding means that the client can’t play the video format of your media file or audio or both. Plex knows what it needs to convert to to play on your client which is called Transcoding. This takes up CPU of the server, which means you can stream more Direct Play video at once than when transcoded.

So I spent a lot of time the last week testing everything. Every time when we watched a movie I staid in to play with all the settings and I CANNOT find anything that makes this work.

I took some pictures from the settings of the Plex client on the Shield. See below. Although it is in the Dutch language I think you can see the asters. To me these are exactly the same as in your example.

It is so frustrating. Everything worked completely well and out of the blue it started to do this. I only got one improvement when I cleaned up the Shield and freed up 6GB of free memory. It cannot have anything to do with the connection since running the movies from Kodi/SPMC work within the second. So my conclusion is that it has something to do with Plex. Since I also completely removed them and installed them again. What more to do??? Any help, even the smallest, is appreciated. Thanks!
