Movies in collections take 15 seconds to load extras

Any movie that is not in collections loads extras quickly, but once a movie is added in auto collections, all the extras take 10-15 seconds to load. This applies to all clients. When on a browser you’ll see a spinning wheel until it times out and it will then render. This is not an issue on smart collections, only collections created by Plex. I have tried the last 6 updates and even did a fresh install with a new database and the results are the same. After all that I did a fresh windows install and no change. I have a Dual CPU with 24 cores, 72G RAM, and the OS and metadata drive are on their own SSD’s so it’s not lacking in hardware. Once again, it’s only movies in auto collections being affected. Anyone else seeing this?

Do you have an excessive number of collections?

Try repairing your database using this batch file. Maybe it can make a difference afterwards.

(If you have changed the location of the Plex data folder away from the default, you need to edit the .bat file first)

No, I only have a few smart collections (4) to be exact. I turned off auto collections due to this issue. I created another library and threw a few movies in there just to see results after making various changes in an attempt to resolve. I have repaired the database and even started fresh. I did update the batch when I moved the data folder and have never had any issues with the metadata other than this. It appears others have had the same issue a few months ago: Related Movies Not Showing Up Or Slow - #6 by JaysPlex7

I appreciate the suggestions and the DB was the first thing that came to mind also. I have also tweaked the DB Cache from 30 MB to 3GB and no impact…

That’s a very bad idea. With a very large database, you can experiment increasing the cache in steps of 20 MB from the default 20MB.
This is not a file cache which is supposed to hold the whole database file.

Of course. I was just experimenting. I have it set @ 100MB. I just wanted to see what (if any) impact it may have on the performance. Increasing to 100MB did improve the UI interaction times but didn’t resolve the collections issue

Are you storing each movie in its own subfolder?
You should do this. The larger your collection is, the more it’s recommended.

Yes, each move is in it’s own sub. It really is the oddest thing. No issues with anything rendering until the movie is placed in a collection by plex. Movies outside of auto collections load all data quickly, 1 - 2 seconds with extras and soundtracks. Smart collections are fine too. It’s only when plex creates the collection itself that everything gets heavily delayed. Playback is fine too for all movies in collections or solo. It’s only the extras rendering. It’s almost like plex is looking at the collection as a movie of it’s own vs. a collection folder.

Does optimizing the database make a difference?

I wish. I have done the plex dance many times. Meta, trash, bundles, network verification, disk checks, cleared caches and even reverified the server.

Does it resemble the screen shot in the first post here?

No Its just the extras.

When loading the collection in the first image you can see it continues to search for something.

In the second image you can see it’s trying to load extras in the movie inside the collection and this continues for about 15 secs. If I remove the movie from the collection, the extras are loaded within a sec or two.

Do you still get a delay if you enter a collection that doesn’t have extras?

The gif you see in the other thread is happening for a movie but I asked because the delay is much worse entering a collection. Like 10 or 15 seconds sometimes

What I found strange is that even though the spinning wheel is taking forever, in many cases you can actually navigate through the collection and select the item you want to play

It’s almost as if the spinning wheel is a false error

Not sure if that’s true for you

Good point, Jay. So as you pointed out, it has led me to a new discovery. I turned off all the extras and refreshed the meta. The issue still remains. So in fact it is not the extras that are causing the issue, it’s searching for the movies in the collection. The extras cannot load until it loads the collection details.

Looking for the movies in the collection…(there’s only 3)

Ten secs later it loads the 3 movies and the wheel goes away.

What in the world is querying? If this movie is removed from collections it shows all related movies, actors, etc. and extras in a sec…

I do appreciate everyone’s help thus far btw.

I don’t know what would cause it

All I can tell you is it appears to be better than it used to be and I did absolutely nothing. Not gone but better

That means it was improved with an update somewhere along the line but that might just have been a happy accident

So here’s the main collection folder. You can see the collection poster at the top and the movies in the collection as they should be. But what is with the wheel? It shouldn’t be looking for anything other than the movies that are in the collection. That lasts for the same 10-15 secs and the wheel goes away and the screen reduces to normal size. The two issues are clearly related but there’s nothing in the logs indicating anything. If anything comes to mind, please let me know! :slightly_smiling_face:
