Movies - Play Version

Server Version#: 1.22.0.4163
Player Version#: Any

I have a couple of movies with alternative endings.

When choosing “Play version…” the only information is the bitrate and resolution which in this concrete case is the same for both the movie and the alternative ending.

Capture

Is there a way to show a more descriptive title under Play Version?

Thanks!

Edit: Never mind. Found out that including a Extra_Directory_Type as Scenes, I can pick up the alternative endings.

Sometimes a bit of searching can be a great help :slightly_smiling_face:

I often debate between using the “extras” feature vs version vs split.

My process, just for sake of options…

  • Director’s Cut\Extended Cut - Split (Superman II and Superman II Richard Donner Cut are two completely separate listings :: Highlander 2 and Highlander 2 Renegade Cut? I just keep the Renegade cut.)
  • Alternate Ending\Alternate Scene - Extra (typically I try to have a clip of the ending instead of the whole version)
  • Different Resolution - Play Version (1080p and 4k of same movie - typically the client will pick the “best choice” but not always)

I tried the “extras” for alternate versions for a bit but because extras fall below cast and reviews, people weren’t noticing a different version of the full film was available. I’d prefer to put Fury Road: Black and Chrome as an extra actually because that’s really what it is but nobody would notice it or see it when browsing library feed.

Glad we have options though! I like seeing how folks organize their stuff - gives me ideas too.

Yeah.

In this case, I opted for Scenes. I know that these two movies have alternate Endings so it’s not a big deal.

Still thinking how to organize “The Godfather - Part III” and “CODA - The Death of Michael Corleone”. Right now Plex sees the two movies as the same - TMDB has it that way - but for me, it’s two different movies. Or at the most, a Director’s Cut.

Because PLEX can’t seem to tell us that, I split my shows.

Ooo… just looked at TMDB and they do have a separate listing:
CODA
Godfather III

You might be able to force a match by renaming or using the {tmdb - 804421} in the file name? Or do a manual “fix match” and use the search and just put “CODA” maybe?

Recently been playing with TMDB editing so was curious how that was listed and just happened to notice the separate listings. I did see they have the poster for “CODA” as the default poster for Godfather III as well though … which isn’t right. TMDB picks the ‘primary’ poster based on votes (unless someone requests an admin to make it primary). So at the very least you can pick a different poster for Godfather III in Plex once you get both to match correctly (I voted for a different one myself on TMDB). If you want them separate.

Mostly I know what’s in my library so EXTRAS would be fine but to be spouse friendly it just didn’t work as well. I usually don’t make collections unless there are 3 or more but for some movies with alts I’ll put them in a collection just for that film and it’s alts.

What I did with CODA was:

  • Split Apart
  • Renamed the title of the CODA movie to “Coda: The Death of Michael Corleone”
  • Renamed the release year to 2020
  • Added the right poster

Worked great. So now I have 4 movies in my Godfather collection.

I love Plex :slightly_smiling_face:
