Movies & Shows in Media Libraries - Actor View doesn't show Editions

Server Version#: Version 1.32.6.7371
Player Version#: Version 4.113.2

When browsing movies by actors/actresses in your library, movies with editions are not displayed.

Eg: I have tagged a few movies as Extended, Unrated, etc. I enjoy looking through my collections using the actor view (for lack of a better word). Example, I watch Gladiator. I scroll down and click Russell Crowe’s picture. I can then see all movies/tv shows in the libraries I have access to from that actor.

The problem is, any movies I have tagged as ‘editions’ (Eg: Unrated, Extended, etc) do not show up in that view. If I scroll down further and select “Media Libraries” and choose my library, I will see the editions listed there.

It’s bumming me out, because I do not see that I have a certain movie in my collection, when I actually do. This doesn’t seem to be a specific issue with any one player either, it happens on Plex Web and others.

Any input on this? Seems editions in general don’t really show up in a few related media sections.

Glad I found this, because it explains what I was seeing too. Every movie I have is edition tagged, because I use them to mark the upstream source (eg bluray, dvd, hdtv, etc), in addition to “extended cut” type tags. This means my movie library was never listed when clicking on an actor, which I just couldn’t understand.

I tested by removing the editions from a couple of titles, and everything works (kind of) as expected. The titles for that actor that weren’t edition-tagged showed up, which then mean the actual Media Library button also showed up, and if you followed that link, then all movies would appear (for that actor), even those using editions.

The page does not load from your server. It has a set of ID that it knows the actor is in ( same as watch.plex.tv) and loads those movies/shows. Editions have a unique ID’s that are not in our DB. Similar to why they do not work with Watch State Sync.

There is a report that was made for it to be looked into but I do not have any ETA on that.

At least that explains the why, but that’s a pretty big issue with editions.

I would suggest the Editions match the unique ID that is in the database but uses metadata to separate the editions, rather than generating an entirely new unique ID.

I actually don’t think it is entirely new and is based on the original ID, just the page was not designed to load anyting but the IDs it knows about. I do think something can be done here but I don’t know specifics on how long it would take. I personally would like this as well.

For sure. I’d love to see this fixed.

Changing how this is displayed may also allow edition ‘stacking’ - multiple editions showing as one movie, but allowing a user to pick which edition to watch.

Yeah, hopefully it can be fixed but for now I’m just happy I understand what was going wrong under the hood.

I’d be in favour of edition stacking too. Disk space aside, the main reason I don’t bother ripping multiple editions is because seeing the same movie multiple times in the main view just doesn’t seem right (even with different posters). Blade Runner is Blade Runner…once I’ve selected it, only then should we get into the specifics of which version I want to watch :+1:
