Movies will not play on my ROKU when it is set to original mode in remote quality

I am new to Plex. I have my server at my shop. My ISP is 1gig both directions Verizon Fios. When I am trying to view from my house I have a number of movies that will not play. They will start to play or look like they are about to play but then stop. Sometimes they will go one chapter and stop. This AM I messed around with settings. What I have found is that if I have my “remote quality” set to original on the player I have this issue. I can do to any of the other settings and it will work fine. I would like to keep it on original because I like the idea of no scaling going on. I searched all over and tried a bunch of the suggestions and could not get original to work. Thouhts?

Just to run a test I went to my Apple TV and it works perfectly with all the same settings. It also works from my PC with all the same settings as well as Apple and Android phones. So I feel like this is not a server issue or a bad rip issue. Seems to me to be with Roku. We also tried this at my brothers house and he has the same problem. I will try the ROKU locally in the shop later today.

Where is the server?
Are you actually in a remote location - or at home with the server?

The server is at my shop in another town. It is a windows based server. It is connected to Verizon Fios for an ISP. Watchguard Router with an Extreme networks switch. My house has the same gear but different ISP (X-finity). My brothers house is different network gear but same ISP (Xfinity). We have never tried to test local streaming with ROKU. We will test that today with a ROKU stick we have and make sure all the settings are the same. We can log into the server remotely so that should help get logs if we need them from both even if we are remote

Ok… I’m not gonna be much help on the networking, but:

See if everything you play on the Roku behaves the same.
Is all the material made of the same things?
(Audio Codec? Video Codec? - Are Subtitles in use?)

Let’s see the MediaInfo for one of the misbehaving files.
Let’s see what the Dashboard Details say while a file is misbehaving. <—if possible.
That should aim us in a direction, at least.

On the Roku, go into settings and find video settings. Somewhere in there is a check box that says something like allow direct play or force direct play. I think there are two places if memory serves correctly, but set both to force and not auto. Also set the playback quality to Original.

Were rolling a Petabyte of storage space on this server, so a few extra audio tracks are not really a big deal lol. Sounds like AppleTV may be the best way to go?

Mostly getting the highest possible quality is what we care about. Plus it is fun when the kids are doing different languages to play them.

The Roku client has other issues as well. I ended up disabling direct play on my Roku because it doesn’t detect the correct aspect ratio when playing 4:3 content in an .MKV container unless the video is transcoded.

Is Apple TV the best player? Is there a fix for the Roku issues? Is there a better player when quality is the most important thing? I have zero issue going out and getting a different player I am certainly not married to Roku.

Last night some movies that would not play are playing this AM and vice versa. So what ever it is is not consistent. The one movie that does seem to consistently have issues is Chaos in 1080p. That one seems to always fail. Since we seem to be able to stream some 4K movies and my brother has been able to stream to his Apple TV I am almost positive we are not dealing with a bandwidth issue.

I also don’t know much about 4K - other than most folks don’t try to do it over a remote connection. To that end I can say I pay for 100MB myself, but some days I’m lucky to get my email. That 50Mb+ bit rate file you posted above may indeed have bits of it peak at way over 100Mbps. It’s just the nature of the beast.

Even if you don’t know about those Peaks in video stream bit rates, Plex does, 'cause it’s done a deep analysis and knows things about your files and connection that you may not.

Also - while TruHD is reported to work on Ultras these days - I’m pretty sure the Roku still faceplants itself on EAC3. I’m not sure what effect that has on the stream, or the transcoding/direct playing of same.

Or maybe not - depending…:

One thing is certain - if one of those 33 PGS sub tracks (image based) is activated it absolutely WILL NOT Direct Play on a Roku, soooo if you have those subs turned on, your file will transcode (or try to) - no doubt about it.

Anywho - if we can get that ‘ex-pert’ in here ('cause obviously I’m not one) - we’ll all know more.
