Moving/Cloning Metadata

Server Version#: HP DL-380p
Player Version#: latest

Hi,
I am wanting to change my data path from a current software raid setup to a hardware raid setup
primarily for the redundancy element, but the other server is also more powerful.

I looked at a few guides online with some settings relating to the registry. I did try this on an older server (not this one which I class as my main plex server) which did not work. All the metadata had to be re done (as did all the custom collections etc) I have spent literally days categorising and adding the metadata on my library to where it is and I don’t want to have to re do it all.

I currently have the data in two folders - TV and VIdeo both contain around 40TB each, I have a usable backup of the data on another server so I can test anything on there before doing it on the main one. If I can literally ‘port’ the metadata to the other server that would save me a load of work.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

What exactly do you want to change?

  1. the location of your media files
  2. the location of the metadata which Plex collects about your media files
  3. both
  4. port the whole server installation to another machine

The right procedure for 4) is described in here: Move an Install to Another System | Plex Support
Keep in mind to keep the drive letters and folder names exactly the same between the old and the new machine. That applies to both the media files and the Plex data folder.
Caveat: this procedure creates an exact “clone” of the old server. Because of that, you must never start Plex server on the old machine again. (there are additional steps to be taken if you want to do this)

So basically the servers are exact clones already, they are named differently but the folders and data are the same. I basically did the whole procedure you mentioned but i did run plex on the original server still as the metadeta didnt seem to carry across.

Ideally if i can replicate the metadata from the primary server onto the secondary server this is all that is required.

Thanks for your help so far

If you do that, you can’t be sure which server machine you are actually communicating with through the web app. Since both servers have identical “machine ID’s”.
(the location from where you load the web app into your browser doesn’t matter)

After cloning the data (make sure both source and target Plex servers are shut down during the copying process!)
you need to access the Windows registry of the clone and remove the item described in this article: https://support.plex.tv/articles/204281528-why-am-i-locked-out-of-server-settings-and-how-do-i-get-in/
Additionally, you must also remove the keys

  • AnonymousMachineIdentifier
  • MachineIdentifier
  • ProcessedMachineIdentifier

Edit the key “FriendlyServerName” and change it, to be able to distinguish the clone from the original server.

Do also go into the Plex data folder of the clone and remove the file ...\Cache\cert-v2.p12

Only after all this, start Plex server on the clone. Then load the “local” web app of the clone in a private/incognito web browser tab, login to your plex account and wait for the prompt to “claim” the server.

Ok so a little more information

The main server is called DL380e (Plex)
The clone server is called DL380p (Plex2)

They both have the same data (exactly) as in TV and Video files, both servers are running plex.

(Plex) is the one i have spent a long time categorising and sorting through collections, adding tags etc.

(Plex2) after it didnt carry all the metadata across, received the standard plex metadata from the relevant sources. None of the collection data or tags carried across and i would have to do a lot of the editing on the files in plex as it doesnt recognise so many of the films/tv i would have to manually key in all the IMDB numbers again, which has already been done on (Plex)

Like i say if i can literally mirror the metadata and collections from plex to plex2 that would be enough.

Once it is in a ‘clone’ status, the (plex) server will be retired.

Thank you again for your help so far

That’s what the above linked procedure achieves, if done correctly.

Ok,
I’ll give it another go, thank you for your help and i will post results in a few days
