Moving Plex Media Server from SHIELD to NAS. How to keep metadata?

As of now, I am running my PMS via Nvidia SHIELD with 3 HDDs attached. Works like a charm. But now that I want some more space, I am moving all my files to a Synology 918+ NAS with 28TB. Nevertheless the SHIELD will still be working as a client (without storage attached).

Since I do own quite a lot of videos with custom metadata & covers, etc. I was wondering if there is a way to move this data onto the new server.

As far as the data goes, it will be the same. But I am afraid if I just attach the new NAS and configure it as a server with all the files mirrored from the SHIELD-attached HDDs, it will configure it as a completely new server (which it actually is) but also reload all stock covers, etc. that are actually already configured on the SHIELD server (where I would like to then detach the HDDs and only use it as a client/playback device).

Any ideas?

I am not sure how to answer your original question, but if you are willing to keep a server running on the Shield in addition to the NAS (you can have more than one), then you just mount the NAS on the Shield (say via NFS) and adjust the paths, etc. Not sure exactly but you get the idea

I’m looking to do the same exact thing. Plex hasn’t made it easy to migrate servers from one device to another. It’s something I’d like them to build into the server apps on the various OS.

Did you ever find a way to get this working? I’m going to be attempting it later this month.

I’d love to know if this is possible with the new 2019 Shield coming out. I want my metadata on that version and i’ll move my old one to another room. I’d also love to back this up in case of errors that require me to start from scratch like I had happen months ago.

If you want to move the server to a new system…

If you want to migrate only the media to the NAS but e.g. keep the server on the Shield…

Be careful to follow all instructions.

Does this allow the migration of a Plex metadata/setting to an external drive, then to a new (2019) Shield? I have a 500gb shield now and about 18GB of metadata. I want to move everything to the newer, faster shield on an external SSD since it’s stupidly only 16GB storage now and there is no export easy button or anything. I need confirmation of how this is possible. It’s 2019 this should be a day one feature.

The “migration” support article is focusing on moving the entire server – not just some content.
I suppose what you’re looking for is described in this support article (limitations of PMS on NVIDIA Shield):
