MP3Tag to Edit Video Metadata For Plex Videos

Greetings, this is my first post so apologies if I break any of the generally approved community formatting norms. I have been using plex for a few years but have noticed an unpleasant lack features when it comes to personal media. After searching and exploring for a bit I came across MP3Tag. Although it initially only seemed to be of moderate help its ability to create custom fields in addition to those provided in the stock version mixed with some experimentation has allowed me the ability to edit most of the fields that are read by the local media scanner and I wanted to share my methods/settings/experiences with you all in case someone else likes micromanaging their personal media to the same degree.

So far I have mapped fields for the following sections in Plex For All Video Types:

  • Cover Art/Default Poster - MP3Tag’s cover art tool inserts a brief still image into the video file that Plex will use as default poster
  • Title - The title section will override Plex’s typical preference for using file names
  • Description
  • Cast - Separated by “,”
  • Year - Year will map to the original date, so far I have only tried putting in just the year so not sure how dates need to be formatted if more specific

For TV Shows Specifically:

  • Show - Show Name
  • Season - Which season the episode is from
  • Episode - Which episode the file is

I have a mapping for the studio section but for a reason I have not yet figured out that works fine for personal movies but not TV shows.

Here is an example configured for TV Show Editing: Example
and here is one configured for Movie Editing: Example

Will continue to work with the program I just wanted to share what I had in the hopes someone might find it useful.

If you want my settings here is a link to the most recent version (12/17/2018)
