can we do something with MP4 and external subtitles combo. Almost all of my episodes are in MP4 and subtitles are necessity for non-english natives. I know you said several times that subs renderer is missing in PlexConnect and that one of the possible workarounds would be to embed subs but I'm not able to to do that without heavy manual work.
Would be technically possible to use transcoding in this case when transcoding option is left on AUTO in settings? In another words could additional check be added so that if video is MP4 and transcoding is AUTO and subtitles are external = use transcode?
With forced transcode in PlexConnect settings subtitles show up fine but then I end up transcoding even compatible 1080p content with embed subs.
What do you mean by external? I have a few mp4 files where I have added .srt subs using iFlicks or Subler, and Plexconnect, and the ATV alone for that matter, play them just fine. These are not burnt in, they are added as a track to the file. Takes about 2 minutes, if that. Do you mean reading an .srt that sits completely outside the media file?

By external/non-embeded/sidecar subtitles I mean subtitles.srt that are in movie folder along with video files but are not embedded in it as a subtitle track.
I have a few video files with embedded subs as well and those play fine, no problem with that. However, when subtitles are not in a video file and video file is MP4 subtitles don't show up and, unfortunately, I have thousands of those.
Thus, my question is - with transcoding setting set to AUTO, can transcoding be used for this particular combo? Seems more logical then showing no subtitles at all and it will give me some time to hopefully, in time, find a solution to embed all those subs.

What does it help to add this kind of code when we could just spend that time in making it right? And we would - if we had some spare...
Baa - that would be awesome!
Workaround suggested is just so that we, who are not english native, could use great PlexConnect in the meantime, patiently waiting for the real solution.
