Multi Episode Files

Server Version#: 1.32.3.7192
Player Version#: 1.32.3.7192 (Unsure if this is the same, though issue occurs web-based, and also on all TV, phone clients etc.)

I’ve ready that it’s normal behaviour for multi-episode files to still have 1 entry each episode in Plex, and each episode plays the whole file. So if you let it autoplay, you watch the same multi-episode file twice, or more.

I have the Paw Patrol (2013) series in my Plex library and the above behaviour is reflected in S2 and S8. However, all other seasons in Plex only list 1 episode per file. ie. The episodes go 1, 3, 5, 7 etc. Listing the the first episode number from the file, and skipping the others. This is how I would like S2 and S8 to be as well.

Since I am getting both behaviour’s here, I figured I’d post to get some assistance, since the behaviour I’m after is clearly possible.

I’ve read the following: https://support.plex.tv/articles/naming-and-organizing-your-tv-show-files/ and just google in general but can’t find any answers, or any suggestions that work, such as changing the ‘Episode Ordering’ setting.

Has anyone come across this? How can I make Seasons 2,8 appear the same as the other seasons?

Here’s a few file names from the affected seasons, in case anyone can see a naming problem that I can’t.

Season 01 - 1 Plex ‘episode’ listing per file
Paw Patrol (2013) - S01E01-02 - Pups Make a Splash and Pups Fall Festival [WEBRip-1080p][EAC3 5.1][x264].mkv
Paw Patrol (2013) - S01E03-04 - Pups Save the Sea Turtles and Pups and the Very Big Baby [WEBRip-1080p][EAC3 5.1][x264].mkv
Paw Patrol (2013) - S01E05-06 - Pups and the Kitty-tastrophe and Pups Save a Train [WEBRip-1080p][EAC3 5.1][x264].mkv

Season 02 - Full episode list, causes episode repeats
Paw Patrol (2013) - S02E01-02 - Pups Save the Penguins and Pups Save a Dolphin Pup [WEBDL-1080p][EAC3 5.1][x264].mkv
Paw Patrol (2013) - S02E03-04 - Pups Save the Space Alien and Pups Save a Flying Frog [WEBDL-1080p][EAC3 5.1][x264].mkv
Paw Patrol (2013) - S02E05-06 - Pups Save Jake and Pups Save the Parade [WEBDL-1080p][EAC3 5.1][x264].mkv

Season 03 - 1 Plex ‘episode’ listing per file
Paw Patrol (2013) - S03E01-02 - Pups Find a Genie and Pups Save a Tightrope Walker [WEBDL-1080p][EAC3 5.1][x264].mkv
Paw Patrol (2013) - S03E03-04 - Pups Save a Goldrush and Pups Save the Paw Patroller [WEBDL-1080p][EAC3 5.1][x264].mkv
Paw Patrol (2013) - S03E05-06 - Pups Save the Soccer Game and Pups Save a Lucky Collar [WEBDL-1080p][EAC3 5.1][x264].mkv

Season 08 - Full episode list, causes episode repeats
Paw Patrol (2013) - S08E01-02 - Pups Save a Runaway Rooster and Pups Save a Snowbound Cow [WEBDL-1080p][EAC3 2.0][DA+EN+FI+NB+SV][x264].mkv
Paw Patrol (2013) - S08E03-04 - Pups Save a Sweet Mayor and Pups Save a Magic Trick [WEBDL-1080p][EAC3 2.0][DA+EN+FI+NB+SV][x264].mkv
Paw Patrol (2013) - S08E05-06 - Pups Save a Rubble-Double and Pups Save a Clown [WEBDL-1080p][EAC3 2.0][DA+EN+FI+NB+SV][x264].mkv

I’ve always named the multipart files as S01E01-E02 instead of as you do (S01E01-02), and never had any problems.

The result for this format

Paw Patrol (2013) - S08E01-02 - Pups Save a Runaway Rooster and Pups Save a Snowbound Cow [WEBDL-1080p][EAC3 2.0][DA+EN+FI+NB+SV][x264].mkv

Every other episode is listed and you don’t get anything that repeats on autoplay

Every individual episode is listed but the first 2 episodes get repeated before it moves on to episode 3 using autoplay

To summarize

S08E01-02 (every other episode listed no repeats)
S08E01-E02 (every single episode is listed but the full file repeats one time)

If I understand correctly you would like to replicate my first example and screen shot for every season so you don’t get any repeats

I tested both of these formats on Plex Web, Plex for Windows, HTPC, and a FireTV and it’s consistent

Mobile devices may not support multipart naming at all (I don’t know)

I don’t know why it’s not working for you. The only thing I can suggest is to Plex dance the seasons giving you a problem and see if re-adding them fixes it

@PolliSoft you may not notice any problem with how you have your files named if you don’t use the autoplay feature

In your case episodes 1 and 2 would play and episode 3 would get added to the continue watching row as you would expect it to under normal circumstances
