Multichannel Audio (AC3 5.1)

Hi,

We are using our own custom player derived from SMFPlayer, not using native or Plex home Theater player.

We tried adding a VC1+WMA file to our server, it worked in the 360 app. It is possible that it might be in the future updates for Plex.

Thanks,

Are you able to give a heads up as to what format / container future updates may support as I'm in a position to encode my movie collection, but would love to only do this once.

Thanks!

I have to say - I invested in a plex-pass to use the 360 app - but not being able to play real 5.1 (no sound for the center channel for me - xbox directly to receiver with hdmi) - is ABSOLUTELY a deal breaker and if it is not possible, will cancel subscription again - VERY VERY disappointing !!

I find myself using the system player when I want 5.1. I will probably not re-up my subscription until this is added either. Save for the lack of surround, I definitely like the app. I’m hoping it’s absence is short lived, that would almost make the Xbox the perfect solution for me.

It gets worse for the 360 app. I spend ages fiddling around trying to get it to work and then I see it doesn’t support 5.1.

I’ve given up with it now.

Anybody recommend a Plex player that does 5.1 via optical out or coax as my surround sound system doesn’t support hdmi (which rules the roku’s out)

Welcome to the quest for the 5.1 well working Plex Player! :)

Use case?

Transcoded content (remote) or direct play?

I concur.... For me personally, this and being able to delete files is the only thing the 360 is missing. If they can get this worked out, it makes it one of the few client boxes that can be hooked up directly via component cables, supports 1080i AND optical out....  I have wrote it on a piece of paper and placed it under my pillow in hopes that the plex fairy will grant this one wish.....

Took out a Plex pass sub to get the 360 app only to find it won’t play 5.1 on my new 5.1 system! Glad I only took a month to test the waters.

last nail in the coffin, a barely working very buggy annoying experience that doesn't even do 5.1.... cancelled sub until things improve.

There must be a player that does 5.1 reliably?

At the moment I've settled on an Apple TV. I set ther server to transcode and play via AirPlay on my iPhone.

Works to a degree. I get a buffering message every so often.

There are, Rasplex does both DTS and DD.

Regards

But does it have an optical out? I think it’s only hdmi.

Interface sluggishness on Rasplex is a no go for me :/

AppleTV Airplay is a nice solution but you need an iDevice nearly dedicated for that (You can use it while airplaying but if you go somewhere in the house with bad wifi signal apple tv starts to buffer)

The best devices I tried for plex and 5.1 (transcoded content) are (until now)

Sony NSZ-GS7 (cons: wifi sucks, you have to use ethernet; interface navigation not blazing fast)

Minix Neo X5 (cons: 720p max, custom firmware, hdmi video quality not good for very large screen/projectors)

wow, I just got plex pass for this and was wondering where my 5.1 was......but looks like I´ll cancel now

I'd like to ad my voice as well. What is the use of a MultiMedia platform that cannot do Surround Sound? First three checkboxes for a MultiMedia Platform: HD,  5.1 and um, something else cool. First two checkboxes for a MultiMedia platform . . . . .

Come on guys, really? Back to XBMC for me. . .

This is a limitation of the xbox 360, not a Plex issue. 360 support 2 channel audio in AAC format in the MP4 container. It supports 5.1 channel audio in the MP3 format in the AVI container. This is nothing the Plex team has control of besides possible transcoding to Microsoft WMV format or AVI instead of MP4.

If you want to blame someone, blame Microsoft for not supporting the most popular containers/codecs.

Does 5.1 sound work ok on the Xbox One? I would consider an upgrade if it fixes this problem up for me. For me i am finding that I have to have the volume maxed out to hear voice's in the video clearly while the sound effects and the rest of the sounds are blowing my head off... it's pretty unusable.

Read the xb1 forum here. *Some* combinations of container/codec have issues. The xb1 itself supports AC3 in an MKV, but I think people are having issued with DTS audio (which I understand to be more common in high quality rips).

If you're thinking of buying an XB1 just for Plex though, I'd suggest you look at other players. I repurposed my old ASUS Transformer Prime with an HDMI cable and installed Plex on it and set it to the home theater interface. Looks pretty awesome on a TV.

thanks for the response, i'm going to give chromecast a go and see if that works any better.

I'm fairly happy with my Chromecasts. Audio volume is a touch low for some content, but overall the experience is decent. You can't really beat the price either.

ok, I understand all that is being said here but if this is the case, what does Netflix / Comcast OnDemand and Windows Media Center use. All three of those play 5.1 just fine? I know DTS is probably a codec licensing issue but DD? Come on.

For me, I have other options (WDTV) but really like the Xbox app and would like to use that. Oh well.
