Plex on my home network is all over the place at the moment, with all sorts of connectivity issues across different apps.
I haven’t really watched Plex for about a week I’d say, but yesterday when trying to watch a movie, I couldn’t get anything to work.
First went to watch Plex on our Hisense TV, Plex for VIDAA. The app won’t even boot to the home screen. Get the message:
Brad74 Plex Server is offline or unreachable.
We tried to connect to serverIP .
Followed with several more lines of dialogue about going into manual server settings to try and fix the issue.
For some reason the app on the PS4 works, so we were able to watch a movie on that, however I suspect the quality was lower than what it should be, even though it was set to play original quality.
Later on that night, we tried to watch some TV on our LG TV, Plex for LG webOS. It would reach the home screen (however take a very long time to load everything up), I can navigate to shows/movies but when I go to play something, it will load for a few moments then give me the message:
Playback Error.
An unexpected playback problem occurred.
I then tried on my phone through the Android app to cast to Chromecast. I was able to get a show to play, but was greeted by the message:
Direct connection unavailable.
No direct connection to your server is available, so available streaming qualities will be limited."
The episode played and that was all we watched for the evening. However, again, the quality seemed lower than expected.
This morning, trying everything again to try and find a common issue; Android works (however slow to load the library but no direction connection warning message), PS4 still works the same, Hisense and LG TVs still have the same issues.
I have changed nothing about my setup over the last week (or several weeks for that matter). I think at one stage the server PC had a Windows update, that’s all I can think has changed. I’ve logged in and out of accounts on the server, on each of the apps and tried reconnecting apps. I’ve power cycled all my devices, the server PC, my modem and my wifi router. I can’t think of any settings anywhere that should have changed. I’ve also tried running the server update (which is now at 1.24.2.4973).
Does anybody have any idea at all what could be happening?
Update: I’ve also just now tried through Plex web, through Firefox, on my separate gaming PC. Here I can get to the home screen, but am greeted by yet another different message:
Limited connection - Brad74 Plex Server.
You are not connected directly to Brad74 Plex server, so streaming quality may be limited. You may be able to connect directly to this server by changing your home network settings.
I was able to start playback but quality is limited to 720p, 2 Mbps. The original is much higher than this. Looking at it, I suspect this is the quality that the PS4 was playing at yesterday (despite the lack of message) and also the show I played yesterday through Android to Chromecast.
