Multiple playback issues on Shield pro - (resolved and it wasnt plex)

Server Version#: 1.24.5.5173
Player Version#: latest

Plex on shield used to be pretty great not so much now…

Crashes often (VERY)
audio sync issues (jump forward, image moves forward sound doesn’t) jump back sound re-syncs
constant buffering
constant annoying message on stalled video (mostly on 4k but NOT limited to) - MESSAGE: network isnt fast enough to play this back (it VERY much is)

Plex please get your sh*t together, personally I would like you putting resources into solving problems rather than giving me features that dont work well… at this point basic function is not working well.

Lifetime supporter been using this for a long time and its gotten kinda crap compared to, it used to feel bulletproof, now I feel lucky to get through an evening using it without a crash.

This is a well documented issue that the Plex team has been working hard to solve. I think they recently may have stumbled on a fix that was included in the beta channel of the app.

If you provide more network information this may be something solved in the chain from your server to the client. What does the network structure look like?

Any help would be appreciated, what would you like to know?
last night it was unusable, stalled so much I just turned it off
its been working fine up until the last few months and its getting worse
which is why I assume its the plex software the hardware hasnt changed

plex server : Version 1.24.5.5173 running on mint 20.1
ASUS AM4 TUF Gaming X570-Plus
amd ryzen 7 2700x 8 core
64 gigs of ram
NETGEAR Nighthawk (R7000) - AC1900
shield pro (software fully updated), wireless connection on the nband of the router
thanks

Can you be more specific about the how the server and Shield are connected to the network? Are the both connected to the 5GHz band of the Wi-Fi? Also are you working with the tube or box shaped Shield?

the shield (box shape) is connected via 5GHz
the server is connected to the router via Cat8 26AWG S/FTP Ethernet Network Cable

Can you share the XML data of the file that is giving you trouble, please? It may also be a good idea to recreate the issue and send the server logs.

When buffering happens, especially with 4K, monitor playback via Plex Dashboard → Now Playing.

Is the connection shown as local, remote, or indirect? If remote or indirect, there is a network issue.

Is the video or audio transcoding?

If you are inadvertently transcoding 4K in software, especially with tonemapping, your server may not be fast enough to keep up.

The “network not fast enough” can be displayed if the media is being transcoded and the server cannot do so in real time. The client cannot tell if it is a slow network or a slow transcode. It just knows that its buffer is not refilling as fast as needed.

Check the connection in the Shield settings (or maybe on your router). It should be 802.11ac. 802.11ac should provide a faster and more reliable connection than 802.11n.

You can use the Analiti app (free) to view WiFi settings, channel assignment, channel width, etc.

You can also test your network speed with Analiti. Run iperf3 on your Plex server and point Analiti’s iperf3 client at it. It will give you a feel for the raw throughput of your network.

hi

thanks for the help and I will. Im gone till next week
have a great holiday

I figured out the issue… and it was not plex, apparently the hard drive was in the process of dying
and it did it slowly causing the errors in the process… goodbye 1038 movies…

thanks for all the assistance!
