When playing a show with subtitles, and two or more things need to be translated at the same time (e.g. someone speaking out loud, while foreign text is shown on screen), whichever subtitle disappears first determines the time the rest disappear. A lot of the time this is tolerable, since the timing generally matches up, but there’s plenty of times when the spoken translation only shows for half a second–forcing me to rewind and pause and unpause until I can finally read the text.
It’s less of an issue, but I’ve also noticed that when the second set of subititles appears, the first set blinks for a split second, like it’s trying to reappear in sync with the second set. I think this is related.
Anyway, I’ve been experiencing this for a while now, but I couldn’t tell you how long.
Included is a sample video file from Mob Psycho 100. In it, there’s a couple of clear spots where this happens, but the worst part is when the text “Disciplining Delinquents” disappears just as the text “I have to make it a comfortable environment for my brother…” appears, causing it to disappear a split second later.
I’ve confirmed that this does not occur when the file is transcoded (when watching through my LG WebOS TV, for example), but my Plex server isn’t powerful enough to transcode HD in real-time, so I almost always watch subtitled shows through plex-for-windows (most of my shows use PGS subtitles. Side-note: it’d be great if the WebOS app could display PGS subtitles without transcoding, like the plex-for-windows app can).
