So I’ve been getting an issue for the past few days (not sure if it started before then) with subtitles disappearing rather quickly.
I’ve noticed this while watching Anime and the subtitles would disappear before the sentence was finished (not every sentence).
When I go onto my PC and play the file with my normal media player, I can see that the subtitles have to correct timing.
I switched out of the early access and tried playing the same file again, and it no longer cuts off at the incorrect time.
The file I was using has an embedded .ass subtitle, which is where I’m getting the issue at the moment. After testing with the normal version I went back to the early access and can confirm the cutoff time of the subtitle is messed up again.
I tried this file part of the file again just now on the early access and on the normal version.
I can still see that the subtitles are disappearing on early on the early access version of Plex and working as expected on the normal version.
I’ve been seeing this for a while. It happens when there’s two sets of subtitles at the same time (e.g. translating text and someone’s speech at the same time). When one of the subtitles is done, it brings the other set along with it, and they both disappear at the same time. I often have to go back and pause just to read it (sometimes there’s only a split second overlap, so it can be pretty annoying).
For instance, I was recently watching Mob-Psycho 100, S1 E6, and around the 8:53 mark, there’s a chalkboard saying “Disciplining Delinquents” while a fair amount of conversation is going on. All of the conversation is being translated at the bottom, while the chalkboard translation shows at the top. Then the chalkboard finally fades away, right as another spoken sentence is getting translated. Because “Disciplining Delinquents” goes away, so does the translated spoken text “I have to make it a comfortable environment for my brother…”, which shows for approximately half a second.
If you need an actual sample, would you be okay with the subtitle file?
The sample provided has a PGS subtitle which always has to be burned in during playback. I’m not seeing any issue with that. Also, the issue you mentioned with two sets of subtitles should already be fixed in the latest version. Can you retest with the latest version and see if you’re still seeing the issue?
I’m using the latest Plex Server (docker) and “Plex for Windows—Player” to play them (currently version 1.20.0.1406-f47a81b7 which I’m guessing is the latest, since I update whenever I’m prompted to).
Sorry, I guess I should have been more specific. I didn’t realize that letting the server transcode the subtitles could make the issue go away. My server isn’t powerful enough to transcode HD, though, so I very much enjoy not having to transcode just to show subtitles using the Windows player. On the player, this subtitle issue crops up on a pretty frequent basis (especially when characters are texting on their cellphones and talking at the same time).
Oh, and my server is running 4.44.1, which again, I’m assuming is the latest version. The docker container updates itself every time I restart it, and I did that just a couple of days ago.
Unfortunately with the latest beta version (5.2.1) the subtitles are still disappearing quickly with the sample file from my original posts. That is with a .ass subtitle.
Still works fine with the normal version (4.29.9).
This forum post is specific to the LG webOS preview app. If you’re seeing issues with the Plex for Windows app, I recommend making a new post with the plex-for-windows tag in the future. I’ve filed an internal investigation for your issue though.

I also have an LG webOS TV, and I can confirm that my sample video does not exhibit the behavior that I thought was related. I will created a separate topic. Thanks.
This should be fixed in the latest preview build (5.3.1). Though you will need to change burn subtitles setting to only image formats otherwise ASS subtitles will be burned by default.
