Multiple version support for audio

Would it be possible to implement version support for audio? Like what exists for video?

I have much of my music in both FLAC and compressed formats for optimal direct play and streaming (respectively) without the need for on-the-fly transcoding (which my NAS doesn’t always handle gracefully.)

I’d also be interested to see the versions feature handle things like remasters, 1.0 vs 2.0 vs 5.1 mixes and other versions. (I imagine most folks would like to keep alternate takes separate, but perhaps that could be an option?) But the versions would need to be more visible than the “optimized versions” feature for video to accommodate those things.

(I know this is a duplicate, but all those topics are closed, so I couldn’t upvote any of them.)

There’s already two existing suggestions discussing options to handle different quality versions or different releases of songs and albums. I suggest you comment/vote in those threads in order to avoid distracting or cannibalizing votes.
