Multiple Versions of Movies

What would be the best way to categorize multiple versions of the same movie so they don’t all show as “Watched” or “In progress” on my Plex home screen. I have the UHD version of Thor: Ragnarok and the regular Blu Ray version as well. They are both in separate libraries (UHD and regular movies). But when I watch one, they both show up in my home screen to continue watching them. Same thing for 3D movies. I have a separate library for 3D, but they do the same thing. Is there a better way to label them or organize them so they don’t do this?

Well the 3D movies I have are separate discs. So I used DVDFab and ripped the regular Blu Ray disc and then the 3D blu ray disc and just dropped them in separate libraries. Are you saying they are the exact same movie? I don’t really understand how all of that works, so that is why I am confused. I think Shrek is one of the 3D movies I have.

I am saying they are the same movie.
Once you have seen one version of it, you know what happens in it.
Adding e.g. 3D picture or surround sound to it doesn’t change the fact that you already know the movie.

Therefore they are trated as one and the same in Plex.

If that was the case, wouldn’t there be 1 movie displayed on my home page then? If plex treats all versions of the movie as one movie…then there should only be 1 displayed. Right now, I have multiple versions of the same movie with the same title and meta data showing whenever I watch a version of the movie. If I watch the 4K version of Thor and stop it half way through, I have 2 versions of the movie showing up as “Continue Watching.” I am looking for a way to avoid that so that it only shows 1 version. Is there a way to do that?

They will only show as one movie, if both versions are in the same library.
(like so: https://support.plex.tv/articles/200381043-multi-version-movies/ )

If you created separate libraries for e.g. 3D or 4K movies, then you will see several ‘copies’ on the home page.

On that page, it states:

Note: This feature is not intended for situations where you might have, for instance, both a “theatrical” and “director’s cut” version of a movie. Likewise, it is not appropriate for 2D vs 3D versions. Those situations are best handled by Splitting the movie into separate library items.

So there is no other option then? Why would Plex not handle this scenario?

I can’t tell you why. I can only show you the options that exist.

I worked on this a little bit last night. It partially solved my problem. For movies like Thor: Ragnarok, it worked fine. I was able to access Plex on my shield and select the version of the movie based on resolution. For 3D or 2D, it did not work because both are listed as 1080p versions, so I can’t tell them apart. I am going to have to keep them separated for now and offer an improvement request to Plex. In reality, it should be as simple as using the “ArbitraryText” that is appended to the end of the movie as the label in the Version selection. That gives people the option to label them how they want. Some people might prefer 4K or UHD or UltraHD or something like that. Some people might prefer 3D or 3-D.

This has been a problem for quite some time and PLEX hasn’t done anything about it… #sad
