Hello, I’ve recently started adding music to my Plex server. It has worked flawlessly for all of my CDs so far, until today. I added three albums from The Smiths: Louder Than Bombs, Strangeways Here We Come, and The Queen is Dead. For some reason, Plex does not recognize The Queen is Dead at all.
To clarify, Plex isn’t having trouble matching it, Plex won’t add it at all; it does not show up and I can’t search for any of the tracks. I am very meticulous with my naming and metadata tags and I’ve added enough music (and videos) that I feel like I’m using Plex properly.
Here is this file structure I’m using:
Plex Music Folder/Artist/Album Title/Song.mp3
I have added over 100 artists (most with multiple albums) to my Plex server and this is the first time that I can’t get Plex to recognize an album.
Verify that the files are actually playable at all.
Do also verify that the file name extension is correct. i.e. it’s actually an mp3 file and not something else. While a player like VLC will play almost anything despite a wrong file name extension, other players are not so tolerant.
Thank you so much for the fast reply! I have verified the songs were all playable. Even though I use a template on dBpoweramp to rip all of my music to mp3, I will check that when I get home. Strange things do happen from time to time. I’ll post my findings. Thank you again.
After reencoding, renaming, and multiple restarts, I could not get it to happen. I did notice that the PNG file that I was using of the front cover (attached to every MP3 in the Queen is Dead folder) was 600 x 593. I found a new source picture and edited it to 600 x 600. Now it works. Does that sound right? I didn’t realize that could cause this problem.
It would be cool to know if the problem was because of the non-square dimensions, or if the problem was due to some corruption in the original PNG file.
We are always advised to use square art but the times I break that rule I have never noticed the files to stop working. If it’s a repeatable error due to the dimensions, that’s a juicy bug IMHO.
Interestingly, I have quite a few 600 x 597 pics, but those were all accepted. Anyway, now I know and hopefully this will help anyone else pulling their hair out trying to solve this issue.
