Plex Server Version#: 1.25.6.5577
Synology Version#: DSM 7.0.1-42218 Update 2
I am running a Synology NAS and both DSM and Plex are the latest versions.
I had previously set up the video sections and found sub-folders were visible when adding folders to library. Videos are showing and working fine.
I recently tried adding a music library to Plex to point to where my music content is located (Music folder) on Synology. However there are no subfolders showing in “add library” like they show on the video folder.
After saving changes, I get the “Music” is empty message.
I gave the plex user and the PlexMediaServer read/write permissions in DSM, however no change. I have tried the volume/music folder as well as volume/home/music folder. Still no change. I completely deleted the music folder and created a new one and re-imported music content via SMB and gave permissions again, still nothing.
I rebooted everything, still nothing. I tried to move a single mp3 into the Music folder and it still did’t see it. I moved that same mp3 in the videos folder and I saw it there in the add to libraries window.
Of course, because the word “Plex” was once uttered from my mouth on a call with Synology, the “3rd party” reflex sprung into action excusing Synology of all responsibility.
Another party mentioned Windows ACL but that is greyed out as an option, and I am on a Mac anyway so not sure what that is for.
Please help me find out what the issue is on why Plex cannot see inside the Music folder when given permissions, but video folder can be seen?
I did already try these steps but I named it Plex Music instead of Music2. It didn’t work.
My temporary workaround is a Music folder inside the videos folder, however, this is very unconventional and DSM apps like Audio Station cant see the music.
I did walk through this step on the phone with Synology. It didn’t change anything. All was already checked. The only difference is the user showing is Plex and not PlexMediaServer.
On DSM 7, user Plex was abandoned. Synology forced us to change the name.
They further removed our ability to delete the user.
You can delete Plex.
On DSM 7, use PlexMediaServer.
The main release notes about all the changes are here:
A few PMS releases later, 1.22.3.4973, when DSM 7 became finalized, I was able to make the final change – which makes the PlexMediaServer shared folder visible so you can make backups.
It has all the same restrictions as the Plex shared folder with one additional —
If permissions get messed up, the installer is NOT able to fix it. It is the user’s responsibility.
That’s why I continue to insert the “no media here” warnings.
