Music files stored on Synology NAS…

DSM: 6.2.4

All my music files now reside on my Synology NAS. I recently created a collection of music by one artist and painstakingly placed each tune in a specific, numbered order and they are saved this way on the NAS.

However, the order is lost when I access this folder in Plex. I have used this process for years without issue and have several, similar collections saved in the same Collections folder.

I checked some of these pre-existing collections, and they too are out of whack now.

I noted a warning to avoid DSM 7, but I am still at v. 6.

Any ideas or suggestions? Thanks.

Thank you for the detailed response. I will try to follow the directions but some of this is above my pay grade.

In regard to my sorting issue; it is a known problem?

Thanks

Here’s where my inexperience shows through…To make a copy of my Plex shared folder and it’s contents to another folder on the NAS, do I use the Clone option? I do not see a Copy option?

Thanks but it didn’t take long to tell me that the size of the library was much larger than what was available on the NAS. No go.

Check that.

No. It was my error. That’s what comes with old age. However, it is telling me the process will take over 11 hours to complete. Yikes!

Maybe I will get to the DSM upgrade tomorrow.

So, my Plex library has been copied to the another folder on the NAS. I have read, and tried to understand your posts regarding upgrading to DSM 7 several times. But, I am still not confident I understand.

I assume the next step is to manually download DSM 7.0-41890 and install it. Yes?

Thanks. It will be safe to uninstall Plex I won’t lose all my music and movies, etc.?

Ok. Thanks. Here it goes…

Sorry, best way to uninstall Plex for this purpose?

Disregard the last, I got it.

ok. DSM 7 is successfully installed and the NAS rebooted. There appear to be several Plex Media Server packages to choose from on the Plex download page for Synology 7. Which one?

1019+ I believe. Had to run some errands. Not sitting in front of it at the moment.

Great! Thanks.

Ok. Normal installation or Plex claim token?

Trying to install from Package Center/manual installation.

I went with normal installation.

Stumbled through the process and after a few hours, I think I have it installed properly. I hope so anyway.

In regard to my initial query, the music file sorting is a known issue, yes?

The upgrades made no change in this regard.

Thank you so much for your help…and patience.

I will try to glean more info on the music file sorting issue.

It was scary at times simply because I do not understand so much about Plex and it is always evolving. But, I like to use these situations as learning experiences.

I don’t recall having this sorting issue in the past. I have a folder which contain several subfolders of either compilations of a certain type of music or of individual artists; such as the Beatles for example. I have them in a specific order and each song file is numbered but it seems to be a Synology thing. They appear in the desired order in the Synology folder but not when accessed in Plex.

To throw another wrench in the works, I also use Yamaha’s MusicCast to listen to our music outside on the deck. When I access my NAS via MusicCast, which in turn accesses Plex, playlists are not even visible. Confusing to me.

Problem. I was trying to access the shared folder for Plex and PlexMediaServer is not visible and, Plex had red lettering behind it indicating “Moving shared folder” What is that about? I didn’t do anything.

I rebooted my Synology, against the warning, and things seem to be back to normal but I sure have no idea what that was all about.
