Music Library Artist Collections: Metadata refresh scan removes artists from artist collections

I have set up some album and artist collections and noticed that over time artists were disappearing from the artist collections (nothing disappearing from album collections). It seems this problem/bug has been around for some years, and there was a hint that this was related to metadata refresh, and this is absolutely the case.

When I tell the music library to refresh all metadata, all artists that have metadata “in the cloud” are removed from artist collections.

  1. My library is set to have a periodic scan. (daily). Note that not all artists disappear on the first day, but they seem to disappear in dribs and drabs over time.

  2. Scan was previously set to empty trash immediately after scan, but disabling this has no effect - the artists still disappear.

  3. Media files are on the filesystem of the Synology server, so never become unavailable.

Edit: Note that album collections are not affected in this way.
