Server Version#: 1.31.2.6810-a607d384f (but happened with much earlier versions also)
Player Version#: Plex for Samsung (5.56.1), Plex for LG (5.56.1), Web(4.100.1)
The problem that I am experiencing is not new, it happened to me over and over again. So, I would not put it as version specific. I have Plex installed on my Synology NAS for some time. From time to time I experience that movies disappear from collections. Of course I already googled it but could not find anything that solved my problem. It last happened when I installed a new Plex version on my Synology NAS. Do I have to stop the Plex Mediaserver before I install a new Plex version? Also when I click “Refresh Metadata” then all movies disappear from collections. I think that I read somewhere that Plex stores collections as metadata and refresh metadata basically deletes all that? And I also read about manually editing metadata and even locking metadata. How is that done? Do I need Plex Pass? Because my screens look differently and I am not able to edit any metadata. Besides seeking a solution to my problem, I also would like to make two suggestions, because I really like Plex and I would like to see it become even better. First, I think the whole metadata thing might not be so well designed after all. I think there should be custom metadata that always takes precedence. I am a software engineer myself and I would approach this in a way to keep custom metadata in a separate collection/table independent of the automatically discovered metadata and then merge this metadata into a golden record. Like it is done in masterdata management. Second, if collections are implemented as metadata, why is that? Maybe explore other ways in which collections could be implemented if you don’t want to do the record merging. Currently, I am inclined to abuse playlists as “collections” because there movies do not disappear, but the problem now is that I have too many playlists because I have many libraries and playlists can span between libraries.
