- The first allows to to select how to setup the library, so Personal Media = Don't retrieve metadata, Last.fm = get metadata from last.fm. You can get to this information by highlighting your section and selecting edit section.
- The 2nd show a priority list of where to get metadata from, with Local Media meaning "use my tags". You can drag and drop these agents into the priority order that works best for you. You can access this screen via the preferences button.
There is no way though currently to just use the "Genre" tag, but if your media is well tagged playing with some of these options may get you the result you want. You will need to rescan your library after each change you make. (so maybe create a test section with a small number of files for your "tweaking")
Do i get it right (http://dev.plexapp.com/docs/agents/models.html#Track) that it is actually not directly possible to keep the genres, because in ID3 they are attached to a track and not to album or artist (as it is in plex)?
One could only take all genres from all tracks of an album and attach them to the album ?
I am using windows and access the media server through a webpage so there is no preferences button. How do I turn off last.fm functionality this way. I've clicked on settings-->agents and I see an artist and album tab and under each of these there is a last.fm and a personal media album/artist. Do I just select the personal media option or do I have to go into all the menus and switch orders.
Lastly and more to my point, I just want to use my files id3 tags, is that possible? When I use my av receiver (Yamaha) and use the server function, I can access the plex media server however when I goto music-->music test(the section that added)-->by genre I get like 20 genres. I have only added three albums by two artists and there should be three genres, bens hits, instrumental rock and rock. So I scroll down and find bens hits and click on it and it doesn't find anything!! Of the 35 total songs I've loaded, a third of them are bens hits but it can't find anything. Is this an internal problem with plex or will it simply not use id3 tags?
Same here - Windows and I want to only use the ID3 tags for genres. This is driving me nuts. The product/service is useless. I have spend days customizing my collection and tagging my genres. Now, I have thousands of genres listed in Plex.
I agree that the genre information on Last.fm (where the default music agent obtains its genre tags) is a little messy. I've been working on some fixes for that agent which will hopefully get pushed out at some point. If/when that happens, genre import from Last.fm will be a settable preference.
Also: I moved this thread to the "Agents" forum since technically the scanner is not the root cause here.
Has there been any advancement on this issue of Plex not reading the genre tag from the ID3 info in the files?
This is a real pain when you import ~250GB of music and then find u have 350 genres listed in the filter! Everyone of my files has a correct genre recorded in the ID3 tag, and there are only 15 of them in total. This makes it very easy for every music player I've used up until Plex to categorise my music library.
I have just started with Plex, with a PlexPass, so am using the latest Windows server and PHT on Windows 7. I have deselected the 'use genre' in the last.fm agent settings, but it hasn't stopped all those unwanted genres apprearing in the database.
It seems like unchecking this check box is not doing anything at all. I have unchecked the box in settings and recreated my music library several times now, however always getting those messy genres from last.fm. Running latest public versions. Any fix for this?
Frustrated by the the check box not working and the rather irritant last.fm genres still mixing up my metadata, I decided to do some hacking.
I edited the __init__.py file for the Last.FM bundle metadata plugin. I have commented the lines having to do with the genres. The file can be downloaded here: http://sdrv.ms/15MOPhL. Basically now the artist do not get any genres and the albums only get the genres I have set in the meta data.
Just as I want it :)
If you want to use the file yourself (completely at your own risk. I am not responsible for any trouble and this is not supported), download it and open your plugins folder (right click on the icon in the Windows taskbar for PMS and choose 'open plug-ins folder'. On the Mac I don't know how to do that). Then put the file in the LastFM.Bundle\Contents\Code folder, overwriting the old code file. Then delete your library and re-create it.
Sorry, I just saw this report about the genres pref not working. I can't reproduce this behavior. Would someone who is experiencing this issue be able to do a refresh with this version of the agent (added a couple of log lines) and upload their com.plexapp.agents.lastfm.log from that run?
interesting thread; this was in issue for me for a long while. Now I see it works.
My problem now is that I see the right Genres. The mobile app sees the albums under each genre. But the Mac desktop app does not see any content under the genres... nuts.
not sure where this dialog can be found... it would be ideal. My own genres with last.fm's artist images...
From the home screen of the web manager, go to Settings (upper right, the little wrench and screwdriver), then Agents, then Artists or Albums, then Last.fm.
Since I spent years to digitalize and tag my music collection with at least artists, title, album and genre, I choose to use the "Local media assets" agent fort both artistes and albums. It seems to be fine for title, album and artists, but the genre is not taken into account (no genre appears in album description or filter). Using Lastfm is not a solutions since I only wish to use my tags.
Settings - Server - Agents - Artists - last.fm - Use genre tags from Last.fm (unchecked)
Settings - Server - Agents - Albums - last.fm - Use genre tags from Last.fm (unchecked)
I have various libraries containing MP3 files, all of which have the genre set in the ID3 tags.
Viewing the genre filters for the libraries in the web interface either shows no entries or a whole load of entries (which I assume have come from Last.fm).
Is there still no way for Plex to just use the genre from the ID3 tags?
